Update: another user with lockups mentioned leaving the unit at the main menu for awhile and it solving his problem. So I booted the unit up and let it be for a half hour or so. It seems to have solved my problem.

Doing everything. I saw lockups in system menus, downloading games and games themselves downloading datafiles. There was no discernible pattern to the lockups.
