I've figured out the discrepancy in number of bytes: when copying by hand in hexplorer, it's easy to accidentally select a terminating character that actually isn't there. Edit->Select All selects the proper number of bytes.

After updating to 1.07, this is still occurring. OS crashes to black screen with orange ouya button in the center. Occasionally the OS seems to recover after a couple of seconds, though, bringing me back to the Ouya main menu screen.
