implemeted a code similar to yours. had to replace the button call in around 100 places in the code. and it's still buggy.... but at least it's playable.
I'm using 0.5.1 (not a,b,c, or d). i made sure i don't have more than one ouyagameobject. it has a constant 5-10 seconds lag when the game is ran.

I think the latest beta isn't using the latest NGUI and causing the examlpe scene not to work properly. when i import it after NGUI there are a bunch of errors (which go away after a reimport) but the controls aren't functioning properly.
