Hi guys! I would like to get your feedback on what I've been working on! Currently it has no title, no story line, and it is pretty much just an engine at this point. Currently it uses graphics from the pokemon games for testing while I find a gfx person but that will change at release date.
Users will be able to make their own graphics for the game, upload them, and sell them in the game(they get 40% from sale, other 60% is divided between the team(as of right now it is just me)

Users will also be able to have/make their own worlds and servers with challenges for people to try. I might make the server open source for people to make custom scripts and such but that will be decided later. But aside from the main storyline that the game will follow, I want people to be given a chance at writing storylines because there is a lot of undiscovered talent out there and who know? We just might find one :)

Controls:
dpad - move
left analog - move camera
r1 - show grid
U,A - switch character model. Yes, I know, some are naked (I have to add armor/clothing)
(shitty)Touchscreen controls for android phones and tablets without controllers and at android 4.1.1 or above

Anyways.... I have a demo available and the inner workings of my server up... so I may as well let people demo it :)
Download the apk at http://mattlangdev.com/rpg/rpg.apk
And you can see all the world data and tilesets that I have at http://mattlangdev.com/rpg/
It's very basic but yeah.... thats it!

Let me know what you think!!

There are no more "dev" consoles.  The final version (which can also be used for dev) is being launched at the end of this month for the Kickstarter backers, pre-orders in April/May and retail in June.

This looks pretty neat! Is it using OpenGL?
  • Matt_LangMatt_Lang Posts: 29Member
Nope! just the regular old android Canvas! :D Do you think it would be more efficient to use OpenGL?

No, Java Canvas should be just fine for a 2D MMO, imo. I must say I like the custom graphics, in throws a different dimension into the mix.

MMOs are very interesting and unique, definitely focus on the online is a good thing!
I understand that you are at the beginning of development,

Right now I'm working on the UI and some of the controls, It is a little tricky to figure out how to target NPCs and Players without using a mouse! As of right now, when you press r1, you will loop through all the targets in front of you, up to 5 tiles away and in a cone shape.

Walk up infront of them and press O?

The game could automatically select the most natural one if there are more npcs in front.

I made the OUYA exclusive games Cube and Creature and Hellworm!

That all sounds quite nice on paper, but then what if the NPC is moving, or what if you would like to target it and hit it with a ranged spell/item. I wish it was that simple :\

Having worked on Rift I can say with certainty that what mlang says is true.  Trial and error, but you'll get there I'm sure :)

Yeah, I'll end up asking my classmates to test it a little bit and tell me what they think would be better for a targeting system... gosh I feel like I'm programming nuclear missiles using the phrase targeting system :D

Wow, OUYA is just jacked up full of old Trion dudes, isn't it? Just how many of you guys did Chamberlin bring along? I've got an image in my head of him just driving up to Trion HQ with a big van and cramming in as many developers and engineers as he could get. :D

Alright I know it's been a while. but I got my OUYA and began working on the game once again. The 4.2.1 update on my tablet screwed a bunch of things up and discouraged me from programming haha but I'm back in full swing now, I even have a gameplay video up(Sorry for no sound)!

The main storyline will involve zombies
