A menu item to shut down the device would be nice too.
  • theellipsistheellipsis Posts: 7Member
i have issues running the updated odk launcher on my rooted nexus 7, when i navigate through the menu a sound is played and it is all crackly and clearly not right. i cant see anything in the store. and crashes when i try to access a few menu options. the background is partially transparent so shows the last app i had open behind it.

will there be further support for the launcher running on tablets? as i feel it would be great to have a "portable" version of the console beyond the dev stage.

I personally don't want there any further support of non-OUYA hardware, because that's just going to get clueless people to contact me to support my game running on their devices, or complain in reviews that my game doesn't run well (since Nexus 7 is quite a bit slower than OUYA, my game wouldn't run very well on it, let alone older cell phones).  Once people have access to real OUYA hardware to develop on, support for the launcher on other devices should be dropped.

    mjoyner,
We don't restrict by console id. This error means that this console is not registered to the current gamer.  The console registration api call was sent and it was success. Unfortunately, log does not show what console UUID was registered.  So,  Invalid console UUID error is justified here.

Would a more complete log-cat help? (From fresh format?)

The OUYA title on the main orange screen, the O bleeds off to the left a little (this also happens to the similar large lettering title style on screens launched from the various menu items).  At first I thought it was just my monitor, but I've seen a few posted videos here and there that show the same issue.

Is this deliberate?  Or are you simply not following your own advice regarding overscan? :)
Deliberate. It's slightly off-screen even without overscan too.

Ok, looks like it is just in the one place:

    Manage -> Notifications
In notifications menu, pressing A (button) takes you back to the main menu instead of back to Manage menu
This has been fixed, it just didn't make it into this RC :)

There is supposed to be a check for if you are running on real hardware.

Yeah, but theellipsis wants other hardware to be able to run our OUYA games, so that consumers would have a "portable" version of the console.  But I don't want to have to support my game running on other devices, and unless I used that check to lock my game out from them, which would then result in people downvoting the game or whatever if most other games didn't do that, then I'd have to support that.

What about a simple "OUYA not detected. Your hardware is not supported! Do you wish to continue?".

    @piers

(FYI: I am running OS rev 4.1.1 on an MK808)

I put the following in as the console id in the prefs.xml file:

    03-09 03:01:12.010: I/Auth Response(6670): {"token":"7aa8c17c-bc30-44c4-af3d-...

and I was able to login.

As the store is complaining about something with the JSON extraction, and that I appeared to be getting an INT or LONG as the UUID instead of a String in my prefs file, I suspect that the String response is being transformed from HEX into INT/LONG somehow...

The following error happens when the store is loading.... Don't know if it is related to the UUID munging or not.

you say a nexus 7 is slower, why do you think the difference in speed will be significant? they have the exact same GPU and RAM.

The OUYA OS shares a common Android core as the Nexus 7, but it's quite a bit more optimized for a console like experience (no noisy background operations sending notifications, for example) The processor is also safely over-clocked because better cooling is enabled by a fan.

I've read claims that say the OUYA is the best Tegra-3 device out from a performance perspective.

Specifically, the Nexus 7 has a Tegra 3 T30L, which maxes out at 1.3Ghz, while the OUYA has a Tegra 3 T33, which maxes out at 1.7Ghz.  And that's not counting whatever OUYA is doing with nVidia to optimize performance.  A tablet that better matches the OUYA is the Asus Transformer TF700, that has the exact same specs as OUYA, including a 1080p screen, but with more storage.

either way, whether the tablet is slower or not, within a year i expect there to be a tablet with the same hardware capability as an ouya where our games will work on them with no issues. i dont think as devs we should change our games to run on tablets. but i do expect tablets to be capable of running them efficiently and an updated ouya launcher would be great still.

But it's not up to us whether the launcher gets installed on a speedy device or a slow one - yes there are more powerful devices. But there are also pretty crappy devices out there, and devices of all different hardware configurations. And consumers are always going to want to install the launcher and thus our games to those devices, and there's a certain type of consumer who will contact support or complain to other people about how a game runs on their device, even if they are hacking the game onto a device never meant to play the game, even if the game warns them it's a bad idea. And if OUYA officially supports running the launcher on those devices, some people will view that as meaning games should work perfectly on them, since Google Play games work on their device.

It also would reinforce the flawed view by the public that OUYA is a cell phone on your tv so will only have crappy cell phone quality games - we need them to be thinking of OUYA as a game console and not even think of it as an Android device.

Why are you thinking that Ouya would officially support such a configuration for consumer use?

Making the launcher available for devs as a fully functional peace of software for use on 3rd party hardware is not the same as making it publicly available for general consumer use.

I would expect in the future after going public with the consumer box, that the downloadable launcher, will only be available for download from Ouya via the dev oriented pages. I can also see the possibility that they will be clearly indicating, in both the launcher and in the documentation, that it is a devs only tool.

Im just saying even if the launcher is just aimed for devs, it should still be fixed of a couple of bugs that i reported in my first post. and that in my opinion a post launch android launcher would be something i would be very interested in.

I was responding to the request to support the launcher on tablets so that people outside of devs could have portable versions of the console.

I did not realize that it was a consumer request.

Deliberate. It's slightly off-screen even without overscan too.

It would be bad if the first thing people see when they boot up the OUYA is a broken home screen. Even if it isn't broken, it looks like it is, and will help form negative first impressions of the system as such.

Equally, some people could mistake it for overscan and spend hours trying to fix it when they first get the OUYA.

Also this kinda stuff is gold for internet trolls and OUYA haters, and saying "Oh, we did that on purpose, it's an aesthetic choice" is a lot harder to buy, and sounds like a weak excuse thought up in a hurry after the event. It's another thing that neatly slots into the narrative some have of "OUYA sucks and is going to fail"

I dont think its a big deal, the OUYA is copying Microsoft's "Metro" interface (I think now called "Modern") where the menu names go slightly offscreen, and then when you scroll horizontally the menu names scroll too but more slowly.

It's not a big deal.  Just because you don't like the text slightly off-screen doesn't mean the Internet trolls will make their charge.  As @Dreamwriter said, there are other examples of this design style out there.

Now let's get back to the things that matter.

User experience stuff like this issue is something I deal with quite often in projects.

For what it's worth, and the reason why I mentioned it at all is because I've demoed the unit to a few non-developers who were interested in possibly pre-ordering, and the immediate reaction was that the display was off kilter.  At the risk of looking like an idiot, I was a little confused by it too.  Thought either the television overscan needed tweaking or it was just a display glitch that hadn't been addressed yet.  I agree that actual functionality is a higher priority.  But then, I'm a developer as well.  Users tend to get preoccupied with the aesthetics.  So as far as "impression" is concerned, it does matter from a user experience standpoint.

The "Metro" look ... the key thing you said there is "scroll".  There is function in the presentation.  The lettering slightly off in that case is deliberate because it gives a cue to the user that there is more data to see in that direction without having to introduce scroll bars.

On the OUYA title and subsequent pages, there is no scrolling at all to the left. So if the intent was to mimic that user experience pattern, it's technically not really understanding the purpose of that typographical arrangement.

I have seen this typographic style in print material. It's usually done to make the typography "playful".  OUYA is the first time I've seen it on screen (outside of the parallax metro scrolling).  I applaud the creativity, but in my opinion, it's not something I'd keep around if it causes confusion.

At any rate, I thought I'd pass on the feed back.  Take it or leave it.

Not sure what's up with the build but it took me at least a dozen tries to get it to connect via wifi.  Then once I was finally connected it took me the same or more tries for it to finally recognize my existing account and password.  Everything enter correctly just connection problems.

Boot screen animation is very nice :)

Store does nothing just a loading animation (not suppose to do anything yet right?) ?
Notifications 5 does nothing just red line?

I hope everything gets more polished and most bugs get smoothed out by the 28th  :|

Keep up with the great work :-bd

Every time I update I do the Reset Launcher option. I haven't had any technical problems.

If you watch, when you load the store it says "Brace Yourselves. OUYA games are coming shortly" on the little notification toast.

Here is some feedback on the current release:
    1. I am confused, is the store still supposed to be down now?
    2. I am told there is a notification, but they dont show up when I go into Notifications. I basically get an empty screen with a small orange line. Selecting it does nothing.
    3. Every now and then the browser crashes when I try to access the dev forums. It also has rendering issues on the Forum top menu bar. Sometimes it does not render.

    @JSIDD

    1. The store is down for now as it's being prepped for launch next week.

    2. The notification appears briefly at the bottom of the screen when you try to access the store, it generally says "Store is down, check back soon" or another similar message. It won't appear under "Notifications".
