Let's do a bundle.

Hello everyone.

My name is Josh Siegl and this thread is being stemmed from another thread located here: http://forums.ouya.tv/discussion/406/community-welcome-to-ouya-game#latest

@JamesS237 suggested that we collaborate on one big community game. While this is always a tantalizing idea, large scale online collaborations very rarely work. I've been the lead on quite a few teams that i've met online and every single one of them has failed. People either stop communicating, don't want to do the work, or never get started in the first place. As a team lead it is my job to motivate and inspire people to do their best work, it's my job to bring people together and keep them involved. I failed in the past, and I take full responsibility for it.

I would like to start anew with this fledgling community, i'm not a failure and I know that the developers here want to succeed as well. Therefore i'm offering to be the team leader on a little project.

The Mini Indie Bundle.

My idea which was started in @JamesS237 thread is one in which we all work together to create a small bundle. Each developer submits a small mini game (with an emphasis on the OUYA's unique features, if possible) which will be packaged together into the Mini Indie Bundle. Here is my original post:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Mini Indie Bundle:

Developers submit mini games (with an emphasis on the uniqueness of the OUYA if possible) to a team lead (more on this at the bottom). Mini games MUST be in pure java (we're talking something small here, no big licensed engines or copy-righted source code). Developers will have their studio/handle listed before the game starts, as well as the box art for any other game that they decide to put on the network.

Payment:
none. If we decide to charge for the bundle all proceeds will go to a charity, otherwise the game will be free. Developers will be paid in recognition for their other contributions to the OUYA gaming system (see description above)

Team Lead:
this is crucial, I have to see how much support I get through the quantity of emails that I receive. I can put together a small website and an official rule set if there is enough support.

About me:
My name is Josh Siegl, I'm currently going to school for Computer Science. I'm currently working on a game called Politico for the OUYA and various other platforms.

Experience: I've been the team lead for other online gaming collaborations, unfortunately most of these things tend to fall apart, therefore I have nothing to show for it. That's why as part of the official rules, I'm going to need a phone number and a Skype account so that we can stay in touch, I'll expect weekly conference calls at your designated time.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

So, based upon that idea, I've started at thread to see what type of support I can drum up.

I want to make this thing free. I'll credit everyone fairly. I'm just offering my support as a team lead.

I can put together a sleek user interface and package everything up nicely.

Let's do this.

I love this idea.  Let me know if you would like any help promoting it on OUYAForum.com.  I'd love to help out!

Mini games MUST be in pure java

    Why?

What's the point of limiting it to a) indie games and b) completely Java based?  If you must make a bundle, make it an OUYA Bundle.

People are going to be making these games for free so getting big companies involved isn't really a likely possibility. And as for having them Java based I'm only guessing here but maybe so everyone is working with the same language and one can easily help the other? another reason might be simple porting. Just guessing :)

Another reason of using java is, this code is OSS, you can't really show the code for a unity game. And small games are better so that new devs can see how they work. It'd be great if the ouya team could officially bundle this, thoughts?

    Same here.

Why not native games, too? Not that I will do that either, but I'm sure some would like that.

Yeah, I'm out of this cuz I'm using Unity... best of luck though. :)

    Hey guys, just an update.

I haven't received any email yet, so i'm going to assume that this wasn't as good of an idea as I originally thought that it was.

There have been some comments about the "pure Java" comment that I made. I wanted users to write their mini games in Java so that it would be easy to port into one big package.

I'm still willing to be a team lead here, but i'm going to need to see some support.

Guys, I made a post on OUYAForum (http://ouyaforum.com/showthread.php?1120-The-OUYA-Mini-Bundle-is-coming!).  Hopefully it get it some more attention.  I personally love the idea.

Thank you very much for doing that, I've been meaning to get creating a forum post on your site detailing the project.

I think that the vast majority of Devs are very busy with their own personal projects (myself included).

I'd definitely be willing to postpone this project until after the OUYA releases, that way devs would have more free time on their hands to build something small and promote their flagship title while their at it.

So, any developers, either Java or Unity, who's in!

I think the problem is no money part, maybe we should make it pay what you want but you get to decide how the pay is distributed between indies and charity like the other indie bundles.

With me it's not to do with money or anything. I have a little project lying around that I'm working on, which I think wouldn't fit here. I would like to help out, but I can barely find time to do the pet project. I think it's not fair to tell you that I will take part and not be able to do enough and let you guys down with a lousy second grade game because of these constrains. I also don't have a dev kit.
Maybe if people want to team up for this I could make a nice effort, or help with the menu stuff?

Yeah, people are busy right now. Maybe later, when the console is released.

Yeah, I agree, I'll get the launcher kinda working in the meantime.

That would be great, I think people would have a lot more confidence committing a mini game if we had a working build.

I would be interested in joining, but seeing as I have no OUYA console for development, and limited game development experience, I'm not sure I can be of much help.

I don't quite get the idea of doing a bundle. If the bundle were to contain games which are already popular and recognizable, thus people already have a sense of their value, then putting them in a bundle at some reduction on price would emphasize what a great deal it is to get the bundle, rather than purchase what you want individually. Putting a bunch of brand new small no-name games into a bundle seems like a desperate move to bring more attention to those games than they would otherwise get. Not necessarily bad in itself but having a bundle of small, thus not likely very polished games, doesn't seem very appealing to me. I could only see putting something into the bundle if I had nothing to lose, which would have to mean my project is bad enough that it doesn't stand a proper chance on its own two feet and the bundle would be a `what the heck, lets try it, I've nothing else to lose` kind of strategy. Again not great business sense. Not to say you should not go ahead with this project and all good success to you, but it seems like an empty hope rather than a strong move.

I think you would have more luck already having some sort of project. Because there is only a readme in the github, people likely will not give much thought to it. However if you create a small, fun, free game, some developers will follow suit. Im working on something now, and it will be in the back of my mind to put it in the project, however not right at the moment.

Also, You say the game must be OSS, does this include the entire game, linked jars and all?

If i want some of my code to be closed (only packaged as a jar, no source), and some open, will you not allow my project?  I hadn't seen anything like this asked yet.

Lets say we wanted to make a bunch of small party games and each person worked on one them (with some overall theme/overworld to tie together) then you are going to get better mini-games then if 1 guy did them all. Or maybe if we did some kind of midway game (with wack a mole, bowling etc)

I would really love to be part of this, But I will not be able to really start developing something until 8th of June.

I am not new to programming, but I am new to both Android and game development, so I am not sure my game can be of any real value. Anyhow, I would really like to be part of that, as I intend to program a short (really short), story-driven minigame. The dev blog of the project is in my signature, for further information.

If you want to contanct me, please email me at [email protected]

I like this idea very much and I think I am going to hop aboard. The only (two) things holding me back right now are:

    1. Time. Currently I am busy with college project(s), I am hoping to spend the summer vacation developing a decent ouya game, so that's why I am currently waiting.
    2. Engine. I have experience using AndEngine, since that is written completely in Java and more of a framework than a full engine, I guess it could work with your notion of "pure java only".

So yea, ill keep an eye on this thread. Can't wait for it to be summer vacation so I can finally get my ouya and start dev'ing!
