To OUYA: What exactly is "Boxer8"?

I'm the lead editor at an OUYA-focused gaming site, so I find myself writing a lot about it. However, it's a bit difficult to talk gracefully and clearly about it. I often find myself writing sentences like "OUYA is running a contest for OUYA games." See what I mean? ;)

I'd like to start referring to the company as "Boxer8"... but, I don't really know what Boxer8 is, or if it even still exists. It would might be confusing to the users, since the OUYA company itself, and most others, usually talk about "Boxer8".

So, can we get an official response about what Boxer8 is, and how you'd prefer we refer to the company?

To confuse it even further, Raffi Bagdasarian in the About OUYA Branding thread refers to OUYA, Inc.  And there is no mention of any company name on the OUYA website that I could find.

Well, OUYA, Inc. is certainly a corporate entity. You can look up their info on the online government corporation databases. But it would probably be easier to write about if you didn't have to say "Today, OUYA released the OUYA." ;)

Looks like they changed their name - the OUYA trademark applications shows it was originally applied for and owned by Boxer8, inc., and then OUYA, Inc. became the new owner of the trademark

Weird isn't it. Still puzzles me why you would want to release a product named after yourself. The only other company I think did that was Nintendo, and they called it NES.

Boxer8 was the name used before we became OUYA. It's now OUYA, Inc. who produce the OUYA console.

This is actually very common especially with startups that were created based on a single flagship product.

Thanks, it's good to get some clarity!
