Sales, Sales, Sales

Sorry if this has been asked before (yea I know) but is there a simple, quantifiable metric showing us how much the console has sold up to this point?

Low or high, I'm seriously ruing the lack of information on this simple factor. You know guys, transparency was a big promise. We paid for the platform ;)

Cheers!

OUYA have stubbornly refused to give any sort of figures themselves in the past (maybe they will this time? Can but hope :) ). I'll run you quickly through what I do know:

~60k consoles were shipped on the back of the kickstarter campaign.

According to NPD, the OUYA has sold at retail the following amounts:

June 13K-19K (probably closer to 13K)
    July 5K-10K
    August ~ 4K
September figures will be out later this month

    (see also http://ouyaforum.com/showthread.php?4649-NPD-sales-numbers)

Those sales figures include places like Amazon, but exclude any orders made through ouya's own ouya.tv website. Probably most of the pre-orders made after the end of the kickstarter but before the console was released in stores would have been made through ouya.tv, but how many afterwards is anyone's guess.

My own estimation is that about 100k consoles were shipped between end of March and end of June 2013 (i.e. 40k pre-orders). Add to that an optimistic 50k or a pessimistic 20k since.

Of course, the other thing is how many of those consoles are "active" as opposed to people who played it for a week before deciding they didn't like it and stowed it away in a cupboard somewhere

Thanks for the details, @SpoonThumb. ; I think a great metric (which will NEVER be released, I'm sure) is how many people bought the OUYA, then spent at least $20 on games.  I am guessing that number is fairly low, given the sales numbers that some developers have posted.

Over on ouyaforum.com there have been threads in the past where people list their purchases. Usually, once people make their first purchase of any game on the system, then they tend to buy quite a few titles. Personally, I've only bought two games on the OUYA to date, but that still adds up to $13 total spend.

This is all anecdotal, but the higher quality games on the system tend to have prices in the $5 - $10 range, along with a bunch of games in the $2 - $5. So actually, I suspect the average spend per user, once you factor out those who have made zero purchases, is probably fairly high. Consider we're only a few months past retail launch, and it's not unreasonable to expect that ARPU to get above $20 per year.

Of course, that $20 spend might translate into only 4 or 5 games, which works out well for the top 5% to top 20% of games on the system, but not the rest.

Still, add in that OUYA quoted a conversion figure of 27% of users making a purchase and really the picture is pretty reasonable - Just comes down to OUYA's ability to shift massive numbers of consoles, and game devs to get themselves into that top percentile on the system

Thanks SpoonThumb, I appreciate your attempt to give an idea of sales in absence of an official press release.

I don't see what's so difficult. A figure of how many units have been sold to retailers would be nice, as Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo would provide. Then info on activations.

I think it defies imagination that not a single word has been made on this.
