Brutal Arena

Just posted up a new public beta of my OUYA game, Brutal Arena.

image

It's a lowest-common-denominator (but lots of fun) local multiplayer arena where the idea is to basically have your cute little character pickup a chainsaw/rifle/flamethrower/gatling gun/rocket launcher/lightning gun as fast as possible and toast the other players (Or bots)

image

There are currently:
- 3 playable characters
- 4 game types (Timed, Kills, Bullet Time, and Rockets Forever)
- 6 levels
- 6 weapons
- 4 pickups (Health, ammo, speed, and scale)
- Supports up to 4 human players (All 6 to come soon)

An experimental built-in Controller Mapper is also included and currently supports 'Afterglow Gamepad for PS3', 'Microsoft X-Box 360 pad', and 'Playstation Dual Shock 3' as well as the standard OUYA controller.
(Note: I'm currently interested in talking to any folks keen to map other controllers for inclusion)

To find out more and grab the latest .apk, check out the Brutal Arena development blog

It's been in part time development since the end of May and so far I've mostly concentrated on getting the code all working. There will a bunch more content to come!

Enjoy.

Just uploaded the Brutal Arena Beta 1.3 (.apk)

    This version adds:
    • Standard OUYA controller mapping accessibility through the built in Controller Mapper
    • 'Overscan' option for TVs with over scanning issues (Has/can some one try this on a TV with over scan issues?  )
    • A new playable character...

Hopefully Brutal Arena will be appearing in the OUYA sandbox soon(ish)

Looking cool, is it a single player too?

Yes you can play single player against bots - but the AI isn't very smart right now so it is pretty easy to win. There are some AI improvements coming in the future :)

Brilliant I will get it then, is it a large download? I only have my 4 year old to play against so think the AI will still be harder then that lol.

The current beta .apk (1.3) on the development blog is around 43Meg - anyone is welcome to download and try it out.

Brutal Arena passed the OUYA review process a few days ago but isn't slated to appear in the sandbox until October 2nd (I'm adding more playable characters and levels :) )

Good stuff, ill look forward to It if I don't download it from here first. What's the price?

I'm planning on releasing this first version of it (Eg Running around in an arena blowing each other - or AI bots - up) for free.
If I can get enough people playing it and liking it then I'd look at a crowd funding project to make another version by flipping the idea on its head by allowing people to play together as a team against a common enemy with a story and possibly customizable characters :)

Ah ok that all sounds good. You don't find such a good looking game for free usually. Reminds me a lot of Bombsquad.

Good news! Brutal Arena has passed the OUYA review and should appear in the sandbox on October 2nd.

In the meantime I've slipped in 2 new playable characters and done a bunch of fixes both on the code and game play mechanics (Eg sped characters up and did some re-balancing on weapons) Read more about the 1.3.2 version here or go grab the .apk on the Brutal Arena home page (~43Meg)

Latest Brutal Arena (1.3.3) is now online.
This is the last version before it is scheduled to appear in the OUYA sandbox (2nd Oct)

Thanks to the magic of Unity3D I've also built some test Windows, Mac, and Linux versions - although you'll still need a game controller set up and they still have the OUYA controller images.

Now the *real work* of building a heap more characters, levels, and weapons can begin! @-)
