It's pretty useless trying to do any sort of analysis on how well a game is selling, how effective marketing is etc without knowing how many OUYAs are out there in total
Plus developers thinking about getting on board with OUYA are being put off by not knowing how large a target the platform is. Even if it is small, developers knowing that might just make smaller / cheaper games instead, rather than totally avoid OUYA, which is what they'll do if they can't get hold of that information
Now that OUYA is out for retail, please can we have some figures (even ballpark ones would do)?
Comments
Even a counter of 'activations' similar to the games on Ouya counter at the site would be useful :)
If it means anything, I just now noticed that the Ouya is not available for purchase online through BestBuy.com or amazon.com. All of my local Best Buys also list it as out of stock. Assuming that launch shipments actually arrived I guess that means they sold out?
That's encouraging for the spread of the console, but still too vague to cheer about since we don't know if that means 10,000 units sold or 10 units sold.

Basically, I'm working on there being about 100k OUYAs in existence (60k kickstarter plus 40k pre-order). Any more than that is a bonus, but all my budgeting is based on that number

There is no questions about it, it's a big market out there, also very little competition.
One thing is for sure, there could be 100,000,000 OUYAs out there but if you game
is just not good... well .. it doesn't matter what system you are developing for.
example: Angry Birds. Plants Vs Zombies.

The only guaranteed accurate numbers we have are from the Kickstarter. About 58k preordered the console during the Kickstarter, and most of those should have been delivered by now, so I'd say that's your baseline if you just want to count number of consoles in existence.
We have no official word about how many Ouyas were shipped out at retail, but anecdotally we've heard that many brick and mortar stores (Best Buy and Gamestop - note that Target was selling it online only) only got one. It was also reported that Ouyas were mostly sold out from Best Buy and Gamestop. After some quick research I found that in the US there's about 1k Best Buy stores, and about 5k GameStop stores. So, if we assume each store had only 1 console, and they were all sold, that's an additional 6k consoles sold for a total of 64k consoles in the wild.
Now, we have no data about online sales, but the Ouya is currently listed on Amazon as the 68th best selling item in Video Games, just behind the Xbox One Day One edition. So, that's promising, but the ranking fluctuates a lot and it unfortunately doesn't give us any useful numbers to work with.
Of course, Eric has good numbers (19k) as a baseline for "active" consoles. Since his game was featured so prominently it's a fair minimum guess for the number of consoles actually being actively used for gaming.
So, anyone's guess is as good as mine, but the numbers are high enough that I think it's a market worth tapping into. I think it's fair to say the "true" market is somewhere between 20k gamers and 200k gamers... and I can't honestly say I'd do anything different as a developer if the market was 20k vs. 200k, so I don't really care. :)
