How big is the market?

It's pretty useless trying to do any sort of analysis on how well a game is selling, how effective marketing is etc without knowing how many OUYAs are out there in total

Plus developers thinking about getting on board with OUYA are being put off by not knowing how large a target the platform is. Even if it is small, developers knowing that might just make smaller / cheaper games instead, rather than totally avoid OUYA, which is what they'll do if they can't get hold of that information

Now that OUYA is out for retail, please can we have some figures (even ballpark ones would do)?

When I showed the OUYA to my manager, he was intrigued.  He needs to know how big the market is before he can decide whether or not resources can be committed to developing games for it.  How many units have been sold?  What countries have they been sold in?  Are there any plans to sell the OUYA in other locales?  (Information about the developer revenue model is presumably available if I take the time to look for it.)

This is very important. Let the transparency continue and give us up to date information on units sold to customers.

Even a counter of 'activations' similar to the games on Ouya counter at the site would be useful :)

    I'm really curious as well.

If it means anything, I just now noticed that the Ouya is not available for purchase online through BestBuy.com or amazon.com. All of my local Best Buys also list it as out of stock. Assuming that launch shipments actually arrived I guess that means they sold out?

That's encouraging for the spread of the console, but still too vague to cheer about since we don't know if that means 10,000 units sold or 10 units sold.

The market will be very small before long - because their customer support doesn't actually help people, especially the ones that did the backing through Kickstarter... I've been emailing them for about 6 weeks with no real help

We can all keep wondering, or help each other to find an estimate. I prefer the latter.

1- From the Sales/Downloads topic. @efroemling states that his game (BombSquad) has over 11k activations. His game is pretty well polished and is featured. Therefore, it is pretty safe to say there are at least 15-20k ouya devices out there.

2- We know that there is about 60k backers from the kickstarter.

So I think the market is not big at the moment (~20k OUYAs).
In the coming months, I hope it gets to 50k OUYAs.
And hopefully if OUYA keeps improving the platform and does some heavy marketing, we can increase to 100k OUYAs.

It would be really helpful if we can find how many downloads Towerfall has to have a better estimate of how many OUYAs are out there.

It's a bit old, but here is my take on how many OUYAs there are: http://www.crystallinegreen.com/?p=408

Basically, I'm working on there being about 100k OUYAs in existence (60k kickstarter plus 40k pre-order). Any more than that is a bonus, but all my budgeting is based on that number

Quite frankly, this is stopping my and my team from working on a next title for OUYA. We don't know what the market is and the analytics are terrible. If we can't even do an estimate on how many resources we can allocate to this market, why would we even develop?

OUYA, developers are the reason there's something you can do with your console. Release some statistics, improve your systems or start dropping the cut you take from sales. You're making it hard for us to put faith into your device.

Please tell us. Like SpoonThumb said, it doesn't need to be exact, any indicator would do. You could say you've sold "over (x) systems" or "over (x) OUYAs have been activated" or even that during some specific day or weekend or week you sold a certain amount of systems.

Even if you don't make it public, tell the developers somehow. Even if you have to make them sign a non-disclosure agreement beforehand. This is vital information for someone thinking about supporting your platform.

Update: as of today my score server for BombSquad has detected 19,247 unique OUYAs playing the game so far.. hope that's helpful.

Well it's really up to the developers to come up with good titles.

There is no questions about it, it's a big market out there, also very little competition.

One thing is for sure, there could be 100,000,000 OUYAs out there but if you game
is just not good... well .. it doesn't matter what system you are developing for.

example: Angry Birds. Plants Vs Zombies.

I'd like to get an idea of how many Ouya users is out there too.

It's one of those things that I think is really hard to get a good estimate for. I'm sure there are people that have just bought an Ouya to have an Android device to tinker with and they'll never even buy a game.

The only guaranteed accurate numbers we have are from the Kickstarter. About 58k preordered the console during the Kickstarter, and most of those should have been delivered by now, so I'd say that's your baseline if you just want to count number of consoles in existence.

We have no official word about how many Ouyas were shipped out at retail, but anecdotally we've heard that many brick and mortar stores (Best Buy and Gamestop - note that Target was selling it online only) only got one. It was also reported that Ouyas were mostly sold out from Best Buy and Gamestop. After some quick research I found that in the US there's about 1k Best Buy stores, and about 5k GameStop stores. So, if we assume each store had only 1 console, and they were all sold, that's an additional 6k consoles sold for a total of 64k consoles in the wild.

Now, we have no data about online sales, but the Ouya is currently listed on Amazon as the 68th best selling item in Video Games, just behind the Xbox One Day One edition. So, that's promising, but the ranking fluctuates a lot and it unfortunately doesn't give us any useful numbers to work with.

Of course, Eric has good numbers (19k) as a baseline for "active" consoles. Since his game was featured so prominently it's a fair minimum guess for the number of consoles actually being actively used for gaming.

So, anyone's guess is as good as mine, but the numbers are high enough that I think it's a market worth tapping into. I think it's fair to say the "true" market is somewhere between 20k gamers and 200k gamers... and I can't honestly say I'd do anything different as a developer if the market was 20k vs. 200k, so I don't really care. :)
