USB Drive

Am I supposed to be able to plug in a USB drive?  When I do, nothing seems to happen.  The light on the drive does not light up as if it is not getting any power.  If I look for the data at /usbdrive or /mnt/usbdrive, I simply get 'Permission denied'.

    What kind of drive is it?  Is it a USB Key (flash drive) or a portable hard drive or something else?  I ask because many portable hard drives these days won't get enough power from a stock USB 2.0 port - I have one on my Wii U that I had to buy a powered USB hub to get enough power to work.

    Well I have tried both USB flash drive and a USB hard drive that is NOT powered by the USB port.  Neither seem to show up.
