Hi, I've just signed up and wanted to show you the title I'm currently working on that I will be converting to Ouya. Karmageddon Khaos is a driving title which is all about running down pedestrians, using mental weapons and power sliding around large open environments. I have a small team making this game with me and we are working really hard to make it something special, the handling engine alone has taken us over 2 years to perfect. Below is a few screens, hope you like it.

Nice shadow effects! How does the performance hold up with them when you start adding larger levels / more polys?

I haven't actually added the shadows to the game yet, also I don't have an Ouya yet either so you are looking at the PC version, after speaking with my team though we have decided we are going to power through to get a demo on Ouya for December with the full version selling at $3 will be out in 2014.

I doubt the shadows will be an issue, I just used a transparent overlay, FPS on my 3gb ram, dual core laptop is the main issue I'm having. Currently it runs at 30 fps.

Im not trying to crap on your game here but.... There is already a game EXACTLY like this although 3d was released in the 90s i believe... and the franchise is still in tact and still porting newer versions to new platforms i believe...

Honestly dont think it'll fly with the original authors and you might even get sued if you try to release something like this...

Oh yeah I know I'm a big fan of that game, I'm not using any of their material so no copyright infringement.

It originally started because of the Carmageddon forum from a bit of fan art I did, now I have over 20,000 views on the site :).

It was going to be a 2D version but then I thought up lots of original ideas like the power ups, cars and all environments are original, added some really fun ideas like combo meters, risk vs reward mechanics.

Hope people will follow this title as it is original, hence the name KK.

They can still sue you if they think customers would be confused, thinking that your game is the other. I recommend changing the name, but it's up to you.

I'm confused I have changed the name from Carmageddon Fan Game to Karmageddon Khaos but mostly referred to as KK

Just saying that most people will think Carmageddon and Karmageddon are the same thing. They can sue you over that. Just warning you :)

Cheers dude, I could just leave as KK. Anywho I've sent a PM to Nobby who is the main man at Stainless with a subject of "will you sue me?" Lol

I got a response from the main man who makes Carmageddon and they were very supportive but did request I change the name to just KK so you was right lol, but atleast they are supportive of my fan game :)

If its only running at 30fps on your PC, then you might have some issues when trying to play it on a ouya.

Good choice on the name. It looks like it's coming along great, and good luck! Is there a projected release date?

30fps is the frame rate I'm actually using, that's what I set the game at.

Also to be fair my PC is pants. It's a dual core, which has only got 3gb of ram, not made for gaming.

Thanks mate, I do like the name Kill Khaos better as it makes the game more original.

I'm hoping to have my Ouya demo out which is free with donations sometime between September and December.
The full version will be out some time in 2014 and will cost between $2-3 with a donation section similar to the one for Stalagflight.

How is the game programmed? Is it done in something like Unity3D, or are you using your own in-house engine?

What did you mean by this, exactly:
30fps is the frame rate I'm actually using, that's what I set the game at.
Is it at 30fps because it can't run any faster on your PC, or is it because you actually locked it to 30fps? If you locked it at 30fps, I'd remove that lock, and make sure that anything that updates (animation, movement, etc) is based on elapsed time between updates. That way, your game will run at the same rate regardless of framerate, and will only be smoother at higher framerates where lower framerates than 30fps will usually result in choppy dynamics the faster things change.

Btw, if you could, I'd still get some sort of agreement in writing if that's ok from whoever owns the rights to Carmaggedon that they approve of you releasing, and more importantly, profiting from this game. The reason why I suggest this is because this game looks quite similar to Carmaggedon. Changing a single letter from "C" to "K" and abbreviating it as "KK" won't do the trick legally-speaking because when lawyers will ask you why it's called "KK", and you'll have to explain it's short for "Karmaggedon Khaos". Even if you're making all content from scratch (models, textures, etc), if the content and gameplay is uncannily similar and the producers of the game (not the developers you were speaking to, the producers who most-likely own the rights) want to sue, they can. If this game becomes the next OUYA Greatest Hit, this will be an issue ;) You could call it something like Vehicle Vandals, Carassault, etc lol.

For example, everyone's heard of Angry Birds, but did anyone hear about the game, Crush the Castle? It came out months before Angry Birds, and had the same gameplay mechanics. Even though the gameplay was the same (Angry Birds' was much more refined), but I think the law would let Angry Birds fly on this one because of its artistic independence: one involves castles, boulders and bloodspatter, the other involves birds, pigs, material, and different sound effects and art style. Making the argument that Angry Birds is trying to knock off another game is less plausible. You'd have to check on copyrighting law though for a better understanding. Here's an article I thought was interesting on the matter: http://www.jeffwofford.com/?p=1014

This project looks similar to a test OpenGL game I downloaded (with source) way back in middle school! The sound effects, collision detection, physics, animation, and in-game editor were amazing. I wish your team tons of good luck!

Hi there, I'm actually using a program called Multimedia Fusion 2, the in game engine has been built from scratch though so it's all mine and my teans not what is built into the program.

I am going to purchase the android extension which comes with the Ouya object so I can build it all on my PC and then test it on my Ouya.

The whole game is locked to 30fps yeah as raising it effects the speeds of everything including the car which makes my environments feel much shorter even though their between 3500-7500 pixels square so not that small.

Also my PC is rubbish and sometimes drops to 22 fps if there is a lot of action on screen. I have written confirmation from the developer who is also the publisher on this title that its ok and they even said they look forward to playing it, I've since changed the name so KK stands for Kill Khaos instead but I assure you that this game is very different in many ways to Carmageddon I've got some great features that are unique to Kill Khaos.

Ah yeah I remember Crush the castle lol, angry birds did it far better job though.

Do you have any info on the open gl game? I'd be interested to see it :)
Thanks for the great comments and hope you continue to follow my title.

I doubt it will do amazing on Ouya Market as its a bit niche and on pics it looks like it falls into the category of car combat which usually means unpolished and rushed game and it couldn't be further from the truth in this case.

It sounds like you're basing all of the movement on the update cycle, which is a bad idea because it means your game will not benefit from faster hardware down the line, and the game will slow down when too many things are going on at once. I don't know much about Multimedia Fusion but I'm sure there has to be a way to base movement speed on time independently of how high the fps is. It's harder to do but once you understand how it works you may be kicking yourself later for not doing it.

Anyway the game looks good so far, can't wait to play it.

Mate stop been a plank lol. Look at the video and notice there isn't even any black people on it coincidently and not because I've ran them all over either lolz. In the 1990's a company released a game called Carmageddon which is a game were you run people over for points and time, my game is like a tribute to it and as soon the game started as Karmageddon Khaos (that's the KK) I was requested to change the name and now it stands for Kill Khaos not Ku Klux Klan (oh hang on that would be 3 K's :p Read the thread then see what it's really about
