Is track-pad useful?

While I know this will not change as it has all has been promised, but I do not like the touch-pad.
^^^
Read above.

It is really just used as a mouse pointer. I do not think it could be used usefully in a game. It seems to be used to make up for the fact that android is a touch screen based OS and that a pointer will be need. Which is not really true at all. For one you should be able to navigate without a cursor. Especially if your creating the standard. Also it is faster to move a cursor with a joystick anyway.

It currently is only needed for typing. As it is the only way to select letters & it is so painful to do. More so than any other console I've used.

I would much have preferred an accelerometer. This would allow you to do things like using the remote like a steering while. or other creative uses.

Just felt I needed to say it. What is your take?

The main thing i use my PS3 for is media. I use my 360 for games as i think its online ability outdoes it in speed, ease and social connected-ness. As much as i love the power of the PS3 high-end games are better on my PC - i just want a console for easy media and social+casual games.
Meet OUYA. These guys are closely looking at the pros of other online services, and looking to burst that right open for even small game devs to have a try.
As OUYA is built on android it also becomes a fantastic media player. DLNA support, WIFI, Bluetooth, integrated media player... and of course the #1 media center? XBMC.
OUYA will be cool for niche games and lightweight nintendoey stuff... but it will be a fucking powerhouse for the a multimedia center! What better for when your getting your pissed mates around finding crap to share than using a web browser to find the latest midget porn! IN W I D E S C R E E N!

No but seriously dude its for the web browser.

I agree that this trackpad is not about to be used for something substantial like drawing or jotting notes, but there may be some simple uses we can get out of it. There's a good discussion going on about the lack of a Start button (or pause button) on the OUYA controller. Some devs have talked about using the trackpad as a Start button (i.e. double tapping it or swiping it in some way will pause the game).

It currently is only needed for typing. As it is the only way to select letters & it is so painful to do.

I was also frustrated with the slow cursor speed when typing on the keyboard to log in on the OUYA. After I installed the latest system update the keyboard was replaced by a better one that allows you to move across the keys with the D-pad. It was much faster and more familiar for typing on a console.

If you go to accessibility settings you can change the pointer speed. It makes it a lot more user friendly.

Yeah niche indy stuff will adopt it too for innovations that you wont like, and media players will use it to select items in long lists faster (but you can scroll with a stick forever) but its sure as hell one of the most important things for any new console to have a pointing device... and joysticks or accelerometers dont cut it.

If anything the #1 thing these guys completely fucked up and missed for what will be their niche market is NFC. New stereos with NFC mean that anyone can just tap their new phone on it and it starts streaming music straight away. Not having this in an Android media box (where google has already done all the hard work 4u) is just nuts!

@Hicsy Your first post is obviously a mistake and you posted in wrong discussion.
Though your second post seems more on track. I think your being sarcastic and are not impressed by the touch pad. Or you could be having a shot at me.

On NFC I think that is a good idea. I feel that the need to say "We have a console that costs 2 digits" was a bit stupid and just a childish marketing gimmick. Even just $50 more would have meant some good features could have been added. Considering it is a once of purchase for a luxury item they should not need to use that.
It still would have been cheaper than any other console.

hmm yeah i guess i keep forgetting how much less the release model will cost.

Oh BTW I just got XBMC working on the OUYA (mostly controlled by touchpad) so w00t! this could be bye-bye ps3 for a while!

I am typing this from the Ouya.
I think having a touchpad is an interesting idea, but it has to be larger to be really usable.
the one it currently has is so tiny I doubt it can be used for actual gaming.
Also, it would be nice if mouse could be controlled with the analog sticks too.

I have a novel use of the touchpad in mind for my game, I'm glad it's there. :D

Yep, I imagine they will make sure the entire OUYA system will be navigable via standard D-pad controls. More than anything the touchpad is there for (hopefully) innovative gameplay.

I think the Track pad should have been on the bottom of the controller, and usable by a finger under neath.  Having to release the other side of the controller to operate it makes it very unlikely to be used within a game for more than a simple gesture here or there as an interrupt.

Hehe, probably quite a few Quick Time events that use it XD

That is probably true.  Touch underneath is how Sony implemented their trackpad on the PS-Vita.
