Suggestion - Themes/Live Wallpapers

SpexSpex Posts: 6Member
Android has had a fantastic live wallpaper feature for a long time now, but there are many who don't use this because of battery concerns. The Ouya, however, has no battery concerns. Given that the Xbox 360 and the PS3 both offer the option to theme your interface to some degree, wouldn't it be sensible to allow the open console Ouya to do the same? When I open the main menu as it is now, the colors are nice but it doesn't feel very lively. I don't know if that will change in future software revisions but it would be nice to allow players the option of tweaking their Ouya to their tastes anyhow.

Anyone else think this is a good idea? Or have suggestions on other ways to theme or customize their interface? Obviously this would be a low-priority for now but it'd be nice to see sometime in the future once the software has been polished.

oh i agree....i think its a higher priority then you think it is....especially when it goes retails...the bland orange and black backgrounds wont cut it. People want to see polish nice backgrounds especially since the new droids are out

Live wallpapers would definitely be a lot more interesting. Yes, no battery concerns either.

agreed, You can find the option on the Ouya right now in the system settings somewhere. I did, but Ouya forces it's own terrible Orange background :( so even if you choose a live wallpaper it won't come through. That really is crummy. Since it is already to go :(

I would love to get rid of the bright red and have something else there.

Haha, wow half a month later and suddenly the cavalry arrives! Glad to see I'm not the only one thinking of this. And really I almost imagine it'd be very easy to pull off. If I recall the Ouya launcher is just a Homescreen replacement. Other launchers use live wallpapers so I'm sure this one could too just as easily!

    @Spex
Well I didn't get my Ouya until last week :D  I also didn't spend much time looking up videos online. So I didn;'t have much knowledge :D

Hopefully the Ouya team will use live wall papers and just plaster the logo in the corner for the retail release :)

Yea I am hoping as well. I figure this shouldnt be a big issue but they've been rushing this thing since the kickstarter campaign...I mean look at the shipping fiasco. So much potental and I really hope they fix the wifi....its horrid

They can't do everything at once. Honestly, I would rather have it work amazing and look crappy then vice versa.
    I do my best.

these are issues though that should have been worked out by now....consumers arent going to understand a half finished model. that or they should have scheduled more time before launch to work out these details....Just look at the Wii U launch and the horrid O/S freezing and load times

You know. I loved the Wii tons, but was so uninterested with the WU that I never knew that. though I suspect those problems didn't affect the sales much. IT had other problems. Like trying to be  PS360.  I think you have a point though.

Developers are a lot more tolerant of "problems" it's part of the job. Getting hands on early release,  beta's, alpha's early development versions. bugs, unpolished just goes hand in hand.

Consumers are a different beast. They don't move by what will be, but what there is. Ouya needs to launch with polish. What is presented right now, I just get the feeling it's going to hit a wall.As I said, I really get the feeling that the Ouya is "developed by developed for developers." is the motto and that motto is jusn't not a consumer motto.

But again. Who knows what will be ready by June 25. maybe there are hundreds of tweaks that are getting put into to retail launch?

OUYA have millions in the bank now and they're hiring.

    • Customizing Android, digging into the framework itself
    • UI and Android app development
    • Streaming audio and video integration
    • Improving our application security
    • Continuing development on the auto-updating and patching software
    • Device diagnostic tool development
    • Analytics services for developers
    • Authoring sample games and documentation
    • Payment processing and billing
    • Recommendation systems
    • Community integrations
    • Database design and optimization
    • Customer-facing web development
    • Server management and scaling

I do expect these issues to be resolved (looks and functionality) but I hope its a little sooner rather than later for the sake of the console's wider market prospects.

Either way, I don't think they'll ignore the issues flagged by their very own backers and users. Tall order but it can be done.

I do think there should be a more streamlined outlet or thread to report issues to be resolved though, so at least we have a clear list being send to the developers.

I have a feeling they rushed this....maybe an August launch date would've suffice......

    Agreed.

I think there definitely has been a drive to get this console out the door but a slightly later "Official" launch date wouldn't have hurt.

I can live with some of these issues as a guy with effectively a beta device but I will also expect a really tightly designed software ecosystem, as I expect with other modern devices when the console is fully launched.

May have to live with this a bit longer but I'll give them leeway for the fact its a lesson to be learned.

I wanted to give live wallpapers a go since there are so many out there so I loaded Nova Launcher on the ouya. Awesomely enough, the ouya launcher is listed simply enough as an app so when I want to hop back and use the store its right there and the home button goes back to nova.

Nova has let me start trying out all the live wallpapers I have been missing out on because of battery life and it looks really really great on an HD TV. I definitely recommend buying and sideloading galaxy pack as thus far it is my favorite. Its also incredibly convenient for all of my apps to be shown in the same location rather than the sideloaded ones being is the depths of a sub-sub-menu. The only thing I feel is missing is the larger game/app icons the ouya games have but I can live with this until the ouya launcher goes open source.

I once saw on a video someone using the normal OUYA interface with the Nexus S live wallpaper instead of the Orange ouya already uses. live wallpapers doesn't use up to much RAM or CPU. and they only run when the Home Launcher is visible. when running on background the Tegra 3 uses its 5th core makes it use a minimum amount of RAM and CPU so that the APP or GAME your using don't crash or freeze. since the ouya don't have any google service and other built-in phone or tablet apps that always runs on background and no battery problem it wouldn't be much of a problem using a low powered live wallpaper. still the OUYA Launcher UI and Firmware will have to get some tweeks to make it happen.
