BombSquad: 8 Player Party-Game Madness (testers needed!)

Hey folks,
I've been working on a wacky party/fighting game called 'BombSquad' for quite a long time now and I'm excited to bring it to OUYA...   the only problem:  I don't yet have my OUYA.  So unless someone is willing to loan me one for a weekend I figure I'd just try to get it working best I can on my nexus 7 and see if folks would be kind enough to try it out for me on the actual hardware.

Here it is:

Would anyone be willing to give it a whirl and let me know if it installs/launches or if you run into any problems?  It has very generalized support for android gamepads so I'm curious to know if the OUYA controllers will work 'out of the box'.  (go to Settings/Controllers/Configure Gamepads if you need to tweak anything).
You can also use iOS/Android devices as controllers via the 'BombSquad Remote' app, and it supports up to 8 players.

Thanks much in advance and I hope you like it (well, if it works...)
-Eric

    wow! :-)
unfortunately its plagued by the same controller id probs as others are now realising... and other local players need to default to new character ( we all looked the same first time).

but WOW! so fun local multiplayer! I love how we could just pick it up, choose battle, and just go! The tips taught us a new pointer each time, and we went from there! We did the default suggestion and about 8 tournaments later, the fight continued to the beer fridge when we all started getting low!

BTW native 360 controller support FTW! they work so much better than the OUYA ones!

Thanks for the feedback Hicsy; glad you like it!

I just posted a newer beta here if anyone's interested:

    Whats new:
    - properly picks up controller attach/detaches that happened while the app was backgrounded (perhaps this at least partially addresses your comment Hicsy?)
    - additional controller config options
    - bug fixes and bits of UI polish here and there

    Whats still missing/broken:
    - apparently text inputs aren't working so you'll have to use default names (or hit the 'random' button in the profile editor).  I'll look into that once I get my console.
    - still needs OUYA-specific button shortcut labels
    - the final game will be a time-limited demo with the option to purchase the full one for $5; this beta is totally unlimited though.
    - built-in mappings for common controllers (currently it'll ask if you want to config ones it hasn't seen yet)

Yesterday I was able to snag an OUYA on ebay so provided that arrives I should be able to get this polished up and uploaded this week.. but in the meantime thanks again for any feedback!
    cheers

1.3.8 just got approved and published moments ago, so you can grab that through the OUYA store if you'd like.. this one has higher quality textures and smoothes out the framerate so it should stay at a pretty clean 60fps.  (previously it would stutter periodically)

Awesome work @efroemling :) Just played on videoprojector with 3 people, we had a blast on the giant screen! Love the fact that the physics allow for so much diversity in game: from the "Darth Vader (best with Luke) Emperor grip throw and throwing out of the arena" trick to running, jumping and kicking heads full force to jumping and do a 360° in air to get rid of the sticky green bombs :) Steady 60 fps non stop, great response. Sold :)
One of our fav game was Micromaniacs on PS1, and you managed to do even better!
We'll soon try with 8 people on the big screen. Keep it up!

Game is great...its a blast but I only have one controller...when is online play coming?
  • jayderyujayderyu Posts: 110Member
Fantastic game, one of our favorites. However, the bombsquad remote app for ipodtouch needs improvement. When moving right it start fine, but then the player slows down and stops. Over the TS analog isn't very good on my touch.
Question the paradigm you believe in

yea the controller app defiantly needs a bit more work buttttt i found it still playable and had a blast with my wife....just paired up my dualshock 3 controller so i prob wouldnt need the app but i love the concept and its almost there. This game is a definite buy and online play would be crazy on this

We were playing 4 last night for the whole demo time!
The game is really FUN but I think it needs some more levels for multiplayer.

I'll definitely buy this game as soon as I get those retail "ouya dollars" card :)

My favorite game on Ouya so far and the first I have purchased! Excellent with 3+ people, and instant classic!

Only thing I wish was more varied background music or the ability to choose a directory with MP3's to use our own soundtrack, maybe seomthing that could be considered in a future update.

Hopefully I'll get that in there soon.  That exact functionality already exists in the mac version; it's just a matter of figuring out how to play MP3s on Android and whatnot..

This is my TOP5 game, really plays well, no controller lag, awesome work.

I am just curious - is there any chance to get internet multiplayer? That would be killer feature.

I'm working on it; its just been a very slow process..  hopefully here at some point though..  I'd love to be able to have 4 local friends play against 4 random people online and stuff..

    Love this game!

You've proven that 60fps and nice graphics are quite possible on this little Tegra3 based device.

I'm curious if you are rendering at 1080p, 720p or some other resolution.

In any case it looks great, thanks for making this game.

    Thanks; glad you like it!
I've locked my rendering to 720p which maintains 60fps well.  I found running at full 1080p dropped my average to around 40-50-ish and I'd gladly give up a little resolution to keep framerates nice and smooth.  It seems like tegra3 can handle 1080p@60hz for 2d games but there's not much wiggle room for 3d ones.

    Hi Eric,

    You made an awesome game.

I have an issue with the newest Ouya update and bombsquad update, which I got today (6/11). I was able to update all of my other games but with bombsquad, it would just download over and over again without ever allowing me to launch it. Removing the game and redownloading it from the Ouya store didn't work and restarting the Ouya did nothing to fix it either.

Any idea what is going on?

    Thanks.

Ack; I'm not sure what would be causing that.. I would think that uninstalling and reinstalling would fix pretty much any problem but apparently not.  Do you have access to 'adb' by chance?.. to where you could do an 'adb logcat' on the console and see if there are error messages showing up?

Bombsquad got caught in an update loop for me as well, but deleting and re-installing fixed the problem.
Ouya game postponed... but I did release a tabletop RPG! LightWeightRPG.com

Just wanted to say that I tried BombSquad out when I got my OUYA, had a blast with friends.  The ability to easily jump in at any point with a wide assortment of controllers was fantastic!  May have been only 4 people, but having a OUYA controller, Xbox 360 controller, iPhone, and Android all in use simultaneously was just great.  I personally don't know if I'll bite at the $5 price tag, but one of my friends absolutely loved it and it opened his mind for what kind of console the OUYA could be and was persuaded to consider buying one when they hit retail.

I have to say that my wife and I have sunken countless hours on your game and have loved it, although sometimes it is quite frustrating. Uber onslaught is incredibly tough. I think my wife and I have played that level a few hundred times without beating it yet. We've come close (3 guys left in last level) and I think we got up to number 12 on the past 1000 games rankings online. The ninjas with the shields are very difficult to kill, especially after it takes a player a while to get back up after getting punched, which almost guarantees being killed by the ninjas.

Any way you can add an option to tweak the amount of time it takes to get up after getting hit or add one extra respawn per level? I can't even imagine how tough last stand is going to be to beat.
