retro-like 2d games: better using low resolution screen modes than 720p, or using 2x or 4x pixels?

hi everyone! i saw somewhere that on Ouya we should only choose between 720p (1280x720) and 1080p (1920x1080) resolutions

so, as i think most of people here were following http://indiegames.com , by rss news or whatever, that a significant amount of games are retro-like, using low resolution displays, or having pixels scaled to 2x or 4x (and perhaps 8x or 16x)

in this case, would be better using low resolution modes on Ouya, such as 180p (320x180), 360p (640x360), 540p (960x540), etc. and having Ouya display hardware scaling them, or using 720p or 1080p resolutions instead, and using 2x or 4x (or even more) scaled pixels instead?

sorry if this question may sound stupid, but i'm really curious about the technical and performance issues about this

Low res may perform better because of fill rate, but high res will look much better.

High res is the way to go!
Try to compare the way wii looks to xbox or ps3. The difference is significant (not as blurry).

I dont think performance will be VERY much worse either. Im not very good in this area tho, so if anyone could correct me if im wrong that would be great!

I made the OUYA exclusive games Cube and Creature and Hellworm!

I think go with a higher resolution (start with 1080) and use pixelated sprites if you want that look. If it performs slower, start scaling it back to 780p or below.
You didn't remember the plot of the Doctor Who movie because there was none; Just a bunch of plot holes strung together.

For Super Daddio 2 I used 640x360.  It scales perfectly to 1080p, 720p or any other 16:9 ratio phone, tablet or tv.  I also get better performance because of fillrate.  If your not using pixel art than use 1280x720.

In the end, it's really about your art style for what format would look better with it.

Competitive players in retro 2D scenes prefer 240p resolutions.

@Glenn_Bacon - scales perfectly you mean it scales without any blur (as i wished), where you see pixels as squares? this is really awesome! (btw, i'm seeing your game at youtube, great one! :) )

My experience is, if the game engine you're using manages scaling for you, then simply lowering the res will give you unexpected results.  Game Maker forces you to manually scale your art assets beforehand due to its clumsy handling.
