If OUYA came up with an IAP item with an "inventory Quantity" parameter, this could be done fairly easily (purchases subtract from inventory, and once it's at zero, it can no longer be purchased).  You could make a limited quantity release of the same IAP item that unlocked the game, or individual items of quantity of 1 that each unlocked the game and distribute codes that would trigger the purchase.

This could extend into game play elements as well.

Suppose there's an ultra-powerful sword in an RPG that costs $100.  The fact that only 1 or 2 players ever could get that sword would be a pretty interesting element to the game.
Not only would this be useful for a psuedo-promo-code system, it would also serve as a fantastic "limited edition" function :)
And it could have the effect of getting players to buy the item sooner, if they know that the item is going to be sold out soon.
You didn't remember the plot of the Doctor Who movie because there was none; Just a bunch of plot holes strung together.

    I like this idea.

To take this idea one step further, it would be great if we could have a set date/time as an alternative/complimentary limit. Would be great for sales, launch deals (25% off DLC for the first week of release), or even pre-order deals.

@bluecollarart: Personally, any game I release on OUYA is 99% not going to come to Android as I just don't care to support 4 billion different devices. I view this as a console that happens to run on Android, not an Android device mimicking a console. If you want that, then there's loads of better ways to do it.
This is how I see it also. My game, Leroux (that @bluecollarart is very familiar with hehe), will likely not see a Google Play or iOS port. PC/Mac/Linux, sure, but I don't want to deal with the bullshit that comes with older API levels and a horrendous amount of device testing necessary. Also, it's not likely that your library of Google Play games will migrate to OUYA.

Presumably prices aren't set in stone once the item record is established n the portal.  Hopefully we'll get management tools in the portal to organize, help modify prices, do scheduled sales, etc.
