Something I'm a bit curious about: will the final consumer version of the OUYA be always online? That is, if I boot up the console while my internet's down, will it simply give me an error saying it cannot connect to the internet (and to "please try again later" or whatever)? Or will it still continue to the main menu and let me play my games offline?
I'm wondering whether I should try to attempt to make my game work offline, or if it's a moot point (in the case that OUYA won't boot into the dashboard when disconnected?)

Hopefully a dev could answer this...
Thanks.

Hey Everyone!

As all of you I am as excited about Ouya as can be! Being an indie developer myself (Mango Down! with two of my friends) and studying the games industry's ecosystem, I came into contact with the people from Ouya on IndieCade where our game Catch-22 was showed.

We already decided to bring our game to Ouya, but having studied current app stores I also want to contribute in building a sustainable app store that offers the best for all parties (platform holder, developers AND end users). Because being indie is all about passing the torch for the next one, and Ouya is in my opinion as indie as can be. Especially with the open, positive attitude they have towards new ideas.

For many developers getting noticed is a big issue since we all know that getting featured is a matter of life and death for your game. Especially for small developers this is an issue which I believe can be solved partially from the inside of a platform, since they don't have big marketing budgets or inside connections to make that happen.

This makes discovering great games a pain for "customers" (hate that word because you start creating something for a human being, and afterwards he/she becomes a customer), and this is also a negative side affect for the platform holder.

My goals is to figure out and generate many ideas for the app store and to create sustainable solutions for the Ouya app store. And I would love to bring everyone in on this discussion and to crack some hard nuts that many of the present app stores are crippled by.

I'm looking forward to continuing this discussion with you and create some really great ideas for the platform that will benefit everyone that uses the Ouya platform!

Greetings,

Guus (Dutch for Gus)

I have heard the idea of using peer review (other developers reviewing your game) floated in a number of places as a way of deciding what games should/shouldn't be let onto the OUYA store.

On the surface, it seems like a pretty good idea. However, I just came across this article which serves as a warning for how it could also go horribly wrong, as was the case for XBLIG:

Thomas Steinke said:

The peer review system just plain sucked. Most people may not know how games actually made it to the system. Microsoft, to avoid obvious legal problems, devised the following system: You would submit a game or update to a game on the system and it would go in a review list. At this point other developers on the system (yes, your direct competition) would review your game (yes, before it is released to the public or anyone has seen it). At this time the reviewer would either submit a pass or fail vote on the game. If the game received 7 passes it would appear on the system, if it received 2 fails for any reason, it would be booted out of the system. Whether your game passed or failed, a 7 day wait period was imposed on the title preventing you from resubmitting or updating the game in this period. If you resubmitted the game without fixing the issue you risked being permanently banned from the entire system. After 30 days if your title did not clear the system (for example people weren’t interested in it enough to vote on it at all), you failed automatically and needed to restart the process. If you needed to release a Multilanguage title, in addition you need 2 reviews for each language you want to release in (this made releasing or even updating localized titles nearly impossible).

Aside from the obvious problems that arise from letting your competition see early releases of your titles and ultimately deciding if your game should make it to the system, Microsoft intentionally left the criteria for review vague with rules like “Your game cannot be frustrating or confusing”. With rules like that you could have fun imagining the creative ways that one could judge a title unfit to release. Each fail costing the developer another week plus the time it takes to accumulate the votes again, potentially holding titles in limbo for months.

It would seem that this would quickly degrade into the chaos of developers maliciously failing each other to prevent them from competing with them, however in practice, as if in some sort of odd social experiment, the opposite actually occurred. Everyone had a mutual goal of getting their title though this tedious process so it became common practice to do “kickback reviewing”, where one developer would “review”(pass) your game with the expectation that you would do the same. It became so prevalent that it actually degraded the quality of the titles on the system as a whole. You see it wasn’t really in your interest ever to fail a game; it just meant that that developer would come back and invent some reason to fail your title. For that reason, fails even legitimate ones became fairly rare. As a reviewer myself (an honest one I felt) there were many times when I elected just not to vote on a game instead of failing it.

Surely Microsoft would step in to enforce order. Due to legal reasons, no one at Microsoft was allowed to view any content on the system until it was officially released to the public. Not even the discussion that occurred in the game’s review forum.
Their solution to this was the moderators or MVPs. These MVPs ran essentially unchecked by Microsoft and had ultimate power over the system. They single handily had the ability to make it so your game would or wouldn’t go out. To be fair, these people had a VERY hard job and were not compensated at all for it. They were reigning in complete chaos and it always amazed me how devoted they were to the system. With that said, their “war-torn” demeanor at times became combative and rude. Some of them had very strong opinions that they were quick to bluntly express and they were the ultimate law on the system.

If there was a serious issue or debate about your game it could be deferred to Microsoft. However since Microsoft could not see your title directly or the discussion that transpired, it would become the moderator’s job to present your case to them and deliver the verdict. You could imagine if the moderator was not on your side this would never go well. Regardless, Microsoft’s de-facto response was always “You guys decide as a community” which in reality meant, “The moderator makes the decision”. If the moderator gave the community the license to pass or fail a game that is what happened. As a reviewer, if you disagreed and didn’t follow suit it usually resulted in some sort of disciplinary action. Any meaningful discussion about how the system could be improved or be changed was almost always immediately squelched.

Clearly some of those issues are specific to Microsoft (such as the legal stuff), but I'm interested to hear what other people think on the idea

I'm assuming OUYA will actually be retailing in physical bricks & mortar stores, so going to spit out a few ideas about how that could benefit all involved beyond just extra sales:

Store Parties
Physical stores can be a great place for the community to get together, and for people to talk about and play games. When OUYA launches in June, there is a chance that consumers could just walk past a cardboard display tucked away in the corner of the shop. However, seeing the console in action, being able to play, and even talk to some of the people who have been making games for the OUYA could really help boost OUYA's profile in the wider world

Hardware Upgrades
Since the announcement that OUYA will follow a yearly cycle of hardware upgrades, it'd make sense if console owners had a place they could go to get their console upgraded, rather than having to buy a whole new console or send their existing one off in the post

Brad Schliesser from Gamestop said in a recent interview with gamasutra that the company is looking to adapt and pivot, and the OUYA could provide additional ways for their stores to stay relevant beyond just selling hardware and DLC / app store credit

here are a few features that I feel would help Ouya.

- Ease user frustration when exploring menus and accessing content (Customers always first, ease of use is key) Where are downloads kept? How do you remove games? What is the process for updating games?

- Allow multiple downloads vs. currently one download at a time.

- Also allow user to be able to navigate around UI without having to wait for download. Build a Download manager.

- Have settings to allow user to set "automatic tinting" / hibernation mode for console so games do not burn into TVs. Make this tinting mode default so users dont complain because they left their game on all week when they went off of town only to find out there is a permanent imprint in the TV. Many use cases here..

Currently, feels like we are on our own. I'd like to see a music player that can overwrite in-game music if dev built that in. I'd like to be able to have users music play from a default ouya music/video player. Or at least an api i can access to allow user to play music during game, shuffle etc..

Seems to me every dev will have to build these features into the games. What do us devs get to take advantage of in upcoming builds? Anything we can tie the game to the platform to make the game feel more integrated I'm all for.

But I've been watching lots of videos from developers and users. also I have been following OUYA since 3 o 4 days later they made the Kickstarter campaign. and so here's my presentation:

We all have seen the first illustrated design the OUYA UI had. and since then it got me thinking about some changes but I wasn't able to design something since my PC broke on march '12. I was able to have another I found on august '12 but it wasn't good enough until I managed to repair it well on october '12. OUYA was making progress and I was always looking forward on it by reading and viewing stuff. later on the Dev kit was out and the UI had minimum changes. but something still was bothering me about the UI. so I decided to make something up hoping members, developers and OUYA team like it.

I present you My OUYA UI:

Click HERE to view in 1280x768 (your wondering why 768.. well some HDTV are 5:3 768p resolution)

You guys are wondering now. "why the hell he used that background, the color of the letters and other stuff" but all of that will be answered. You see I always read about how the ouya background wasn't that good to look at and so I changed it to a background I made by looking at the NVISION APP black dots live wallpaper in witch it only move on Tegra devices. I really like it but the point on here is that it would be nice to have the background users wants and that's why I made the letters that way so that no matter what background has, the letters never disappear. I also improved the buttons, bottom bar, and the date and time on top. I'm still not quite sure about the notifications look. as you can see I also made a user name with a round avatar as the O of ouya. and made the improvements to fit any wallpaper.

here's a quick look about basic background changes.

black and white. you may have noticed that the game block also has white frame with shadows on both in and out of the game picture. that's the improvement I made.

different wallpapers. the quality is bad because I exported it as a GIF animation. but still shows what I'm talking about.

this is how it would look when selecting something

Back to main explanation.
APPS: obviously things other than games.
GAMES: the ouya games downloaded
STORE: to download game and other content to the ouya
MEDIA: content such pictures, videos and a shortcut to the music player it self
SETTINGS: where users manage the WiFi, Bluetooth, app and game manager, controller settings, OS updates, storage space, the security such as a password to your ouya, language input, the factory reset, ouya account signing, date and time.

all you guys know about that, but I added MY OUYA: I thought that this could be the place where you can manage your OUYA profile such as your Avatar, Region location, Bio, and stuff like that. Is also to look at your personal messages, notifications and achievements. and maybe put here the "change wallpaper" option.

APPS

Click HERE to view in 1280x768

I bet OUYA will come with apps something like this. Like I said ouya UI has lots of space on the screen. They only have 2 lines and a BIG BIG BIG HEADER covering almost half of the screen. So.. I made the illustration of something I've send to them for like for ever about the lines and why not have 3 instead.

later on I think "hey this are apps.why not have them like we already have then on the tablet or phone. I mean.. lots of the apps don't take more than 30Mb of space"

so having them on a space of 5x10 with big icons wont make a lot of apps blocks and would be easier to find your app. the ouya is a game console OUYA team should focus on making a great game managing system. (I putted some random apps on the screen).

GAMES

Click HERE to view in 1280x768

finally GAMES. I really love the way is all put together. (all of this games are xperia play, moga gamepad and normal controller optimized. I just selected them randomly)

oh this games are "last played" only... no problem press A button (options)

Click HERE to view in 1280x768

a dark shadow came from the right and your options appeared. As you see it will show you the options of the selected icon (or block as I call it) it also shows how you want to display your games. and shortcuts in "other options" in which those shortcuts will show everywhere except on games since this is only for the UI and the store. shortcuts are great ways to jump from one way to another without going home and look for it. I think no other console has shortcuts.

select "Alphabetical" and presto.

Click HERE to view in 1280x768

so here it is. 12 games in one whole screen. the order on this screen and every other is from up to down and then pas to the right. except the last played screen that is the big block an then the 2 below that one that goes from left to right and then the other 6 blocks are up to down and goes to left. it isn't hard to understand.

STORE (home)

Click HERE to view in 1280x768

Mind blown in 3.. 2.. 1.. "OMG the STORE!!!"
the store is something else. I used the Official DEV Background of the ODK 0.0.4 because I thought it would be nice that the store has its own background. also thought the possibility about making it a separated APK file of the home launcher. that's why I added a "view downloads" and "view cart" because it would be stuff only from the store. and to make the separated background of the store it would only be made if the store were separated from the HOME. unless they figure a way to make it using the firmware they made and the other stuff like MY OUYA as well.
Any way. this screen will show the featured games or so. it can also be made to put banner announcement like in Google play. special events that a bunch of games have limited time price offers. and stuff like that. I bet most of the members here like that too.

The price tag on the games are made out like the clock because I thought that will fit in. I forgot to make one games written on the tag as "Installed" or "Purchased" sorry about that. you'll get the point.

NEW RELEASES: open this and will only show the games last added to the OUYA STORE.
VIEW ALL: this will show all games like in "GAMES Alphabetical" 12 blocks with the same A-Z display. I was thinking that pressing LT or similar button could show a shadow from the left like I showed on games but on the other side and have there the list of category (racing, action, adventure, etc). and by pressing "options" display as user wants. (rating, A-Z, last added, etc)
ADD-ON: seriously all modern consoles have them (including psp). this just download something that alters the game data is that simple. the thing is that developers know how to do it.
APPS: the app section will show just like in "view all games" on the store and have category as well too. but I'm not sure if they would look like in play store icon and name on the right inside a thin block or like any other block I made. I talking about this because of the thinking I did a while ago. if apps looks like in play store it would fit 24 thin blocks instead of 12 normal blocks.
VIDEOS: I'm not quite sure about this one. but maybe ouya team podcast or game developers podcast, maybe game trailers. I don't know I really don't remember why I put it.
WALLPAPERS: I was thinking that live wallpaper could be in this section and normal WP too. I mean almost every console lets you have WP and since this is android live WP too. maybe it would be good to try it one day. the ouya is 4+1 cpu cores and 12 gpu cores. It wont change that much with a WP. not all people are developers, some are just artist like me. Fan art will fit here and wallpapers from the game developers too.
COMING SOON: this would be the part in where we could find the new games, apps or updates that will come to ouya. maybe other content too such as the future add-ons that will come too.

I forgot to add DEMOS and OUYA NEWS which ouya team and developers would make important announcements here such as double XP for 2 days, server shutdowns, or other important stuff. Making a developer a "Favorite" will instantly provide you all the news via your PM system on the console. Downloading a game could too send you instant PM when developers announce new things about that game.

STORE (buy screen)

Click HERE to view in 1280x768

clicking a game will send you to this screen to see info and buy it (I was goin to use Canabalt but couldn't resist using MC4)

on top are the buttons to buy or send to wishlist (ouya team could make it favorite button instead). it has the name, the developer. rating and category. below all of it description. and on the left is the pictures or screenshots. a video such like trailers or gameplay. the other info need date launched, version, downloads and size. but I added something important.

If ouya will be a console for everyone to have. that includes parents buying it for their children. and developers with games other than casual games. games with 3 or 5hrs+ of story mode and online gameplay may have to rate their games with ESRB. 2d or 3d, free or sell it doesn't matter. ESRB rates it too. take as an example gameboy advance games. they are 2d and rated as well as any other game. also this way indie developers will make their way in being more recognized by the gaming world. as an indie console ouya is perfect but they need to think about parents too. they will buy anything looking good for their children and so ESRB could be the case for this situation and have the store with a parental control too. if not rated with ESRB on content rating will be low, medium and high maturity.

MEDIA

Click HERE to view in 1280x768

This is like an internal gallery that shows your downloaded videos and pictures. also shows your screenshots. like on any other gallery you could share the screenshot to a social network or to a friend via PM. on the bottom is a stock music player. I choose the Music Player for PAD/PHONE because its free and its a well good made music player but there are several good players too out there like double twist, poweramp, playerpro, xplay, and others. It would be good that the internal video player could read different video codecs and not just MP4.

See Music Player PAD HERE on play store

Any way. I was thinking that maybe all the blocks including the one of the games and the store could have the labels I putted here. but not on the store home, just the other places of the store like in view all and new releases, and so you know where. it would be great to label the blocks. that way the block would have only the art without the logo. some game logo are hard to read.

Well I think this is all. I hope you members and ouya team like it. it took me several days to make this and some hours to write down all here. I am willing to give the .PSD file to the OUYA team if they want it and take it seriously. this is my gift to OUYA something to combine with OUYA's ideas and designs. thank you for reading.

Redesigned resolutions "Game screen" previews:
480p
720p
1080p
1024x600 My 10" tablet

One helpful person managed to dig some info up but it was 6 months old so I'm hoping for some updates.

My questions were; Does the promotions start at Ouyas launch and run for one year from then or does it start from when your game is released? If you were to release 2 games in a year, would they both get promoted? If not, could you choose which one did get the promotion?

Thanks

Ameon Entertainment is Seeking
Programmers for Armored Tank Assault 2. Armored Tank Assault 2 is a
modern tank shooter designed to be X-Platform from the ground up using Unity+Photon Server.

We are running our Second Kickstarter
for Armored Tank Assault 2...so far not so good.

The Plan: Develop Armored Tank Assault
2 further, then Re-Kick, for Kickstarter number 3.

We are seeking motivated Unity
Programmers for ATA2 who have a passion for multi-player games,
specifically war games. We Plan on using Exit Games Photon Server for
our primary networking technology.

Ameon is a 1337 Ouya Backer and we
would like to release this Shooter on Ouya/Android/iOS/PC/Mac so we
will have to stay within the hardware requirements of at least the
Tegra 3 generation of Devices. We have been one of the first to
receive the Ouya Developer version of the console.

Ameon started developing for Armored
Tank Assault MP for iOS in 2011 and received “New and Noteworthy”
on the Apple App Store on release in July of 2012. Our goal for 2013
is to build products that are capable of being ported to common
platforms so we are no longer platform dependent with platform
specific code (i.e. Objective-C).

This is a royalty based financial
rewards gig, we are a boot strap indie studio so we are all working
on a wing and a prayer right now. As the product gets further
developed we will run Kickstarter's to help cover development costs
and disperse funds to our team upon a successful completion of fund
raising goal.

Right now our team includes two
University Computer Science major Programmers that have part time
availability, myself working full time on multiple Ameon Projects and
numerous 2D and 3D artists that have part-time availability. Even if
you are an entry level programmer this may be a good opportunity for
you.

Perks: We are allowed 2 Installs of our
Unity license which includes Unity Pro, iOS Pro, Android std, and
Team Asset Server. If you have good Unity experience and can work
full time on project we will allow you install one of our copies on
your workstation. We also have generous royalty sharing to be
discussed by emailing below.

Please do not respond to this thread if
you have any questions. Instead please send and e-mail to
steve[4t]ameon [d0t] net . Or visit our website at www.ameon.net .

Hello,
I was just thinking - there are many games already available on the Android and it seems that they could technically run on OUYA, but there would be no way to control them, since it lacks touch screen.

So I got an idea for a possible solution, that would make at least some (maybe I exagerrated a bit in the title ^^') existing Android games playable without having to port them - by mapping the controller to specific areas and simulating touches.

The simplest scenario is with games which are controlled by virtual d-pads and buttons - simple buttons are easy - assign each button on the controller to specific spot, where will be a touch simulated, when the button is pressed.

With analog directional stick, you can do similar thing - simulate continuous touch, which will be displaced from the center of the virtual movement stick by the current magnitude and direction of the gamepad's analog stick - the same way you displace it with your fingers when playing on the screen.

What would be a bit more complex are games that have additional ways of controls, like the Minecraft PE, so the mapping would require more work (the virtual buttons would work the same, but what would need to be solved is the camera rotation and block placing.

Of course, some games would be entirely impractical and unplayable with the game-pad, like the Fruit Ninja for example. You could emulate the touches as some virtual cursor, but I doubt it would work very well.

So the generic form of this idea would be some kind of service running in the background, capable of emulating touches based on the controller data, based on some configuration data (or simple scripts) made for each specific game and the goal would be of course to make the configuration for the games as simple as possible - as little work as possible.

What do you think? Would you like something like this?

I would probably try to do it myself, but I won't have the OUYA until April, so maybe somebody else will do it by then.

Spine2D is a nice 2D skeletal animation tool. The makers of it just started a Kickstarter campaign. It could be useful for many developers here and make animations in our games more fluid. I was a beta tester and I love it. Here is the kickstarter link: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/esotericsoftware/spine - support for Unity is one of the goals, the application already supports libGDX.
