I've been giving some thought, and figured a few people might find this post at least a little bit useful for making 3D games perform better on OUYA. Here goes.

Pixel lighting kills
The Tegra 3 is not nearly powerful enough to handle a lot of per-pixel lighting just yet. Keep that in mind. For example, I wrote a special shader that allows one single per-pixel directional light, and everything else is handled per-vertex for speed. Don't use a ton of per-pixel point lights everywhere, this will kill your game's performance. Additionally, keep your per-pixel shaders as simple as possible.

Overdraw/Fillrate kills
Overdraw is when the same pixel is written to over and over again. This can kill your performance like nobody's business. It can happen with transparent surfaces (pixels need to be written multiple times in order to perform blending), and it can also happen if opaque polygons aren't correctly depth-sorted. Even if your polygons are correctly sorted in front-to-back order, you'll still want to figure out how to cull out as many as possible. Look into adding occlusion culling to your game. I ended up writing a simple raycast-based PVS generator for my system.

Draw calls kill
You can get away with some number of draw calls, but too many and your game will start degrading pretty heavily. You want to batch together as many meshes as possible in order to avoid having tons of draw calls.

Polygons do *not* kill (that much)
In case you're worried, how many polygons are being rendered is not your biggest concern. You can't have too many, but you can probably get away with around Wii-level polycounts.

"You just went full 1080. Never go full 1080"
Jokes aside, really give some thought into how much resolution your game really needs. 2D games and possibly very simple 3D games might be able to get away with a full 1080 without sacrificing performance, but the more visually advanced your game is, the lower you will probably want to go.
I personally made the decision that my game would run at an arguably very low 480p. Before you start gasping in shock and imagining the horrifying giant pixels this might result in, keep in mind this is the maximum resolution a Wii can run at. Obviously it worked for the Wii, and in fact it probably helped drastically reduce fillrate issues (allowing developers to put in more particle effects and such)

Well that's what I have. Some people will probably already know everything I just said and call me Captain Obvious (*gasp* you just learned my secret identity!), others might somehow find some bit of information they didn't know. Especially the last idea there is aimed at some games already on the store (I'm looking at you, iMech Online. Maybe lower the resolution just a tad? Would help reduce fillrate on those explosions of yours)

OUYA is meant to be open. So open sourcing some suitable parts of your code will allow your code to develop faster.

Not only that people can modify and develop alternative launchers. Currently you would have to use the standard android launcher as a base.

Also this part is not really a security problem at all either.

So remember your promise was an open console.
Hello,

I am unsure how many other people are effected by this blatant ploy by OUYA to save on shipping or taxes that now like a number of other friends and associates my unit is being held indefinitely by customs or worst case shipped back.

"

Further Detail:

Shipment is held pending clarification of goods valuation

Next Step:

A DHL representative will attempt to contact the importer for further clarification or proof of valuation if required by Customs.
"

This unit has been in my market now since last week while many other developers here in my geographical location have their units. I am exceptionally upset and I believe that OUYA has the responsibility to take care of this problem for us supporters. Now here I sit to having to waste busy time out of my schedule to follow up, to make calls and try to sort out a problem that never should have happened. A problem that should have been thought out by OUYA not by a supporting developer.

In good faith we all coughed up at the 700$ or better level and I believe that it isn't up to me to have to further spend additional funds or time trying to solve this problem for you. Now I have no idea how to sort this problem out and of course no one seems to be at the end of any telephones to help move me through the system to get this taken care of which means most likely I will have my unit returned to Hong Kong and then will be out of the running in my opinion. The whole concept of buying into the OUYA was to have a head start. By the time I will receive my unit now it will be closer to release date and this makes me exceptionally disappointed and frustrated in your organization and its ability to properly and without shady dealings perform any kind of effective logistics.

I feel for all the rest of the people in Germany and other countries that frown heavily on shipping fraud or the inability of exporters to properly label or value their products. The OUYA units have a market value of 99$ this is the value put on the shipping labels and not listed as being only 0.01 cents. Simply crazy and quite unfair of the OUYA folks to do to the rest of us.

I am just glad that some units are slipping through.

Can we have some kind of movement on this? Can I receive anything that I can give my customs agents here that will in some way prove how much this unit is so I can get it out of lock down before it gets shipped back? The OUYA units are not 700$ they are 99$ the additional 600$ was a premium paid by supporters to gain early adopters access to your hardware. You really shouldn't have screwed over your loyal supporters like this trying to save a few bucks.

Thoroughly disappointing.. Please I implore you to do something about this please, asap!

I was thinking about how there haven't been any major updates to the OUYA for a while. I understand there is a bit of a quandary with releasing big updates for the OUYA. On the one hand, releasing earlier means people will complain about the bugs that weren't spotted and how you should have waited longer and done more testing before releasing an update.

Equally, waiting till later, if there are any bugs, people will complain that you should have released the updates earlier, so those bugs could have been found and reported by the community.

So I was thinking it might be a good idea to let people opt in to getting earlier updates, to get the "public beta" version of the OUYA software, but understanding there will be bugs that they can then help identify and report back. While those who just want the finished thing with hopefully no bugs or problems to get in the way of their game play can just stick with the stable build

I know that the whole console is, in a sense, in beta at the moment, and that it complicates rolling out updates. However, it might help provide better and earlier feedback and at the same time help reduce support requests and negative PR

Back during the kickstarter campaign, Julie Uhrman said during an audio podcast interview that rooting the OUYA would then cause that OUYA to lose access to the store and services. Has anyone run into this?

Also, I am interested in taking a few apps that I bought on Google Play and side-loading them to the OUYA (PocketCasts and TuneIn Radio specifically). What is the best way to get those purchased Apps from the Google Play store if I do not have an Android device (the one I DID have that I bought the apps on bricked a few months after I bought it off of it, it was a media-player much like an iPod Touch, so it wasnt a phone or tablet). I have been unable to download apps to a Virtual Machine install of Android (using Sun's VirtualBox software on my PC).

in this video at 12:41 the download screen for a game is shown.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3yVzH5TwO4M

My screen does not look like that. It looks like the really old view with just a jumble of text down the left side. Downloading brings up a dialog with a download bar and the only option is cancel once you start downloading. Also still all the crap about hitting back goes to the home window(very frustrating).

Is this still the case for everyone else?

o and i have gone to ouya updates and it says I am up to date..

Edit:

Thought I was just clarify it seems that the apps on the store update and can be downloaded. Just not the ouya store interface

I couldn't find any sort of Ouya bug tracker to submit to, and this isn't a bug report for a game, it's for the system software, so I'm going to post this here for now. If I've missed the obvious place to file this, just let me know and I would be happy to move it.

In the Credit Card menu (under the account menu), when entering your card number, the on screen keyboard changes to only display numbers (as it should). However, the 3 missing rows still seem to be enabled as far as the controller is concerned, to the effect of needing to scroll up 4 times (hit up 4 times on the analog stick or D pad) to get from the bottom row of the keyboard (where the shift and space keys are) to the top row of number keys, even though there aren't any usable keys on the hidden rows. This behavior was observed running software version 1.0.4 and build 1.0.248_r1

Dear forum friends:

I wanted to let you know that I was able to develop a cloud gaming system which can be easily added to any Ouya game This makes the Ouya console fit to compete with powerful systems such as the Xbox One and PS4.

Also the system has not been deployed yet which means that you can only utilize it correctly from within 5 miles from our data center. This is a link which uses the aforementioned cloud system: http://gamejolt.com/games/sports/wavelogy-cloud/10854/.

Feel free to leave your comments in the section below.

Happy coding!

-Pixelapp Team

Hey folks,

Does anyone know if there are official vector files somewhere with the most recent button/controller icons that are used in the OUYA interface? I'd like to have nice clean consistent icons for my games.

Or are these a Branding no-no for some reason? There was another thread where Nick from the Ouya team posted a link to some buttons that were temporary but he said they'd be updated as they finalized them...however, that link now goes to a 404.

Any one know? Thanks!

I made a similar post/question in this thread: http://forums.ouya.tv/discussion/67/about-ouya-branding
