So, I just wanted to clarify... It is ok to root the OUYA, right? I know Julie (keep up the good work!) mentioned it in the kickstarter video, but could it lead to bricking my console? I'm still quite new to the Android platform, so I don't want to do anything to jeopardize my console haha.

Btw, the reason for me to root my console is to find out where in the filesystem my APK is being held. I'm reading up on articles on how to use libzip to read the contents of my game's APK so I can finally start loading assets without needing to re-word all my filenames and extensions. Seems really messy if you're aiming for multi-platform development.

Hi all,

I'm new to the OUYA and this is my first post here. After a long amount of time looking up tutorials, I came to the conclusion that most others don't have this problem while connecting their PS3 Controller

The general understanding of the process is:

Plug in PS3 controller through USB

This will turn off Bluetooth (disabling the OUYA controller) and allow PS3 Controller to work while wired

Hold power button on OUYA till turned off

Remove USB Cable completely

Power on OUYA > Power on PS3 Controller > Power on OUYA Controller

Done.

I've attempted many variations of this, but connecting the PS3 controller via USB will leave it working for only 3-5 seconds before immediately turning off or stopping to work altogether. Restarting the console doesn't allow it to work either.

Any help is appreciated,

DM.

PS: To those wondering, it is a legit Sony controller.

Ouya folks are definitely hard at work to improve the store. This topic will have ideas to improve the store to help out the OUYA folks a bit and tell them what the devs really want.

It would good if we can see what the OUYA devs are going to be doing. May be a link to their project tracking tool to show us their upcoming features. (i.e. a link to JIRA/bugzilla or whatever they use to see what you are working on next on the store).

Here's a list of ideas that I think will benefit the devs:

Ability to specify pricing options before downloading.

Ability to embed a video trailer.

The More Info button actually has more info not the same thing as description (i.e. allow us to add more stuff .. may be embed the video trailer in the more info or the pricing in the more info).

Ability to browse developer profile of games.

More useful categorization. For example, "Play Like Bawb" is useless for a gamer. It does not tell me anything about what i'm going to expect from this play list of games ...

Put more exposure on the different categories .. currently they sit at the bottom!

Reward games that present themselves properly perhaps by including presentation into your O rank. You can measure on first submission by reading the description of the game and see if the screenshots show any of what the description is entailing ... Look at their game cover ... etc.

Obviously provide caching for users who bought the game so devs don't have to do it on their own.

It looks like the store doesn't cache the game info .. so every time I open the DISCOVER menu it re-downloads the images?!

If any one else have more ideas please add them to this topic.

Regards.

When connecting a USB keyboard, the on-screen virtual keyboard doesn't appear any longer for the input fields. This might be the perfect behaviour on most android devices, but I'd say on a gaming system, everything should work from the controller.

I'm actually using a Lirc USB receiver to control xbmc from my tv remote. This thing presents itself as a keyboard and thus disabling the on-screen keyboard as well. But with the added problem that it's not actually a keyboard, so I cannot just get up and write on it. Instead I end up unplugging the lirc every time I need to input text.

Is there a way ( maybe a magic key combo on the controller? an advanced setting somewhere? ) to force the on-screen keyboard to appear?

Thanks!

Ouya Launched with a Futuristic Tactical Combat Racing Game!?! Sucks to be me...

Fortunately, it's just another Wipeout ripoff, so the Game I conceived for XBOX to challenge Wipeout on Sony can still stand well against Flashout 3D...

Wipeout's Tactical Combat elements weren't very serious. Too Arcade-style. Deadly Realism is cooler. Most peeps play EVE Online and WoW because they're serious, not because it's "fun". More Hardcore Players in Pay-2-Play MMOs. My Game is half a new kind of MMO and half Single Player "Career" Mode. Tutorial Version will offer a Full Playthrough as one Playable Character; Full Single Player Version offers 47 additional Playable Characters for cheap or Free; "SE-LMO" Version offers Full Multiplayer after purchasing a Competitor Account, either via Bidding(due to demand) or for a fixed, one-time Fee, probably $30-75. But the fixed price is only a bargain if you are good enough to Survive. Run Free, or Die Trying...

Fatal Inertia definitely had issues, but it was a much cooler Game. And F-Zero had larger Fields of Competitors per race, right? Up to 30. Still not enough. Think TrackMania...

And what about a Racing Game geared toward Spectators? Think NASCAR. So few drive, so many want to...

I'm kinda miffed I've gotta build a Game like I've conceived. Someone else should have been there years ago. Microsoft really blew it with Quantum Redshift too. They got tired of trying and F-Zero/Wipeout Fans probably got sick of giving the Xbox attempts in the Genre the benefit of a playthrough. It's a delicate Formula and you've got to get it right or *phut* goes all that $ and an entire Dev Cycle...

:~: UPDATE :~:

I've been pondering the Player Statistics on the Racing Genre ever since I Published my Concept to Greenlight. Non-wheeled Vehicles makes them fall off rather sharply, I figure. But I'm not looking to attract more than, say, 2-10k Gamers actually interested in Playing the "SE-LMO" half of the Game. And I'll make no guesses about the potentially interested Gamer Base for the Single Player Version, since it has RPG elements. Rich Characters in an Expansive Universe with an epic Plot Arc and Branching/"Crossecting" Storylines? This power is not to be underestimated... Ever...

Statistical Estimates
% of Players Worldwide who regularly play Racing Games: circa 35-55%
% of Regular Racing Gamers who prefer wheeled Vehicles: circa 60-75%
% of Regular Racing Gamers who like Weapons mixed in: circa 35-65%
% of Regular Racing Gamers who might try "Skewed ~ Orig.0": MAYBE 3-7 Percent of Worldwide Gamers.
= Not too bad, really, if you Develop your Game for Multiple Languages. Russians and Asians in general take their Gaming very seriously. EVE Online is a prime example, I think.

And if you do at least a few things that have never been done before, you might actually have a shot. And I don't mean being a Launch Title for a new Console, either. I'm talkin' Star Trek here, Boldly Going Where No Game Dev has Gone Before. That's the point, after all. Cloning established/successful Franchises isn't right. Come up with your own Genre re-defining Concept, or it should be Shame on You...

LOL. I was even going to Donate $300+ to an Indiegogo Campaign for a Wipeout clone, just to show how much I Support the Genre. But I scared them off by showing just how serious I was in an E-mail Inquiry. English wasn't their primary Language, though, so they probably couldn't read all I wrote them without getting a headache. Besides, I suppose there is No Excuse for being interested and actually asking Questions and providing Feedback and such.

When are you considered a Game Dev? When you Conceive a Project that you eventually WILL finish, even if it takes 20 years? When the first Programmer joins your Team? When you're 50% done? When you Ship your First Title? When it's an undisputed success in its Genre? When? I'm seriously Asking, because I call myself a Game Designer. I would argue that when you type that first word in your GDD, the one that starts to Define your Concept, if your Destiny is to finish that GDD and go from there all the way to Publishing and beyond, into a Career in the Field of Game Dev, THAT is when you become what you are going to be. And if you don't believe that, How can you even start? We are what we are, even if we aren't yet. "To be!" is the Answer, and "Not to be?" is the Question you should never ask yourself. Or don't even bother starting...

Just get in the Car and Drive! You'll get wherever you're going eventually, because that's Life...

In the developer profile (and tax documents) we entered our full company name "deutschundfranke mediadesign GmbH" but we would like to release our OUYA games on a more readable name "Dufgames".
There is no actual company under the name "Dufgames" but we'd like to have that as our "games label" so to speak.

Does anyone know, if we can enter our label name in the developer profile but still keep our official company name in the tax documents? Would that pose a problem with taxes etc.?

OK OUYA... I'm hoping to get a lot of support behind me for this.
Don't do a yearly refresh!
Seriously, don't release an OUYA 2 next year. Wait. Give it time. Give developers more time to develop for the OUYA 1. Work out the flaws.

Wait just one extra year. Then release OUYA 2 with Tegra 5. Because at that point, you'll have learned from your mistakes, worked out a better OS... and then when Tegra 5 is available you release OUYA 2 which will objectively outperform the Xbox 360 and PS3 just in raw GFLOPS.
Don't believe me? Tegra 5 so far has been announced to peak at 400 GFLOPS when clocked at 1GHZ. The Xbox 360 tops out at just under 200, and PS3 at around 218. So objectively it will outperform them by about twice as much.

If you don't release the next one a year from now with Tegra 4, it will actually have a bigger impact. For one, a lot of developers and gamers simply won't be keeping up with a yearly refresh (I'm sorry to say I certainly won't). For another, if the power jumps from about Wii-level, to suddenly curbstomping the PS3, I think it would actually get the attention of a lot of gaming media.

Thoughts?

I've been wanting to write my own Linux-based OS for embedded systems for a while now. With the OUYA coming out, I thought it'd be the perfect platform to start working on. The problem is that this post I found suggests that the OUYA isn't as hackable as I thought it'd be:
http://randomfoo.net/2013/05/10/hacking-the-ouya

It looks like overwriting the OS with something different can easily brick the OUYA, but having security on the bootloader will keep us from the level of modification some of us would like to be. Is this here to keep people from trying to hack the store? If this is the case, then I understand, but since the kernel's open source, couldn't this be possible as-is?

Here's why I want to write my own OS for OUYA:

I get that the console is built from mobile hardware running a modified mobile (aka, embedded) operating system, but I'm not sure if Android is the best way to go. Android focuses on Java development, and running native code in C/C++ isn't supported well. Native games cannot exist without expensive JNI calls to the Java-based ODK, and I think this could be one of the reasons why reading controller input takes such a performance hit.

There are a few reasons I favor C/C++ over Java:

1) Garbage Collector

Java is great for Rapid Application Development (RAD) where users want to build apps which utilizes Android's GUI elements. Garbage collection is part of the design, which although not quite as efficient in all cases, it gets the job done well enough for these types of apps. This would be fine for apps like Facebook, Spotify, a Calculator, etc. but not so much for games. Allocating and deallocating memory are expensive operations, and Java doesn't give the programmer much freedom over the when and where in the code we can do this.

2) Stack vs Heap Allocation

It seems that complex datatypes (object variables, or instances) must always be allocated on the heap, and never the stack. Allocating on the heap means that if you have a method that needs to have some temporary storage instances of your Vector and Matrix classes, you'll have to allocate it in memory each time the method is called, then leave it up to the garbage collector to free later on... whenever it wants... Imagine having to perform CPU skinning that might require some temporary variables, well, you'd be running that skinning method per object per frame. Let's say there's 100 objects in the scene and you shoot for 60 frames per second. That method is called 6000 times which means that each instance in that method is re-created and constructed 6000 times a second.

In native C/C++, anything allocated on the stack is allocated when the game is initially loaded, and all that happens when the skinning method is called, all instances are just constructed. The data is all released once as well automatically once the game or that thread terminates.

Constant allocation/deallocation adds a small bit of overhead with each occurrence which will lead your CPU's performance to a death of 1000 cuts, or in this case 6000 alloc's, constructs, and (usually) untimely deallocs whenever the garbage collector thinks it's enough.

I understand that Java code can execute as fast as native code due to how Android works making it feasible on embedded devices, but its memory management will cause a performance hit. Heavy arithmetic on complex, user-defined datatypes will cause this, and this is probably why Google only recommends using the NDK for "physics simulations" and the like. Game programming is full of math like this.

3) Operators

If we had to choose solely between C or C++, there's no doubt many will go with C. It's fast --and many even say it's beautiful. C++, on the other hand, is object-oriented, and due to this, has operators. How nice would it be to have a complete math library written up (I have one, actually), and all of your Vector, Matrix and Quaternion classes have overloaded operators instead of function calls to perform vector-vector, vector-scalar, etc arithmetic. It's cleaner to write this in C++:

Vector d = a + b + c;

Instead of:

d.Add(a);

d.Add(b);

d.Add(c);

Or something similar.

4) Expensive JNI Calls

The entire ODK is written in Java, so if you want to use the NDK for your entire game, then you'd have to poll for controller input from the ODK, you'd have to write the code in Java, then use JNI to pass it to the NDK. Doing this just once per player per frame can be quite heavy, and it'll make the code somewhat ugly to work with. It looks like even working in Java, reading controller input can cause performance issues.

I'm aware that the ODK has more APIs than just the controller, such as required store APIs calls, but the controller APIs are what's going to be called frequently regardless. This is why I single out the controller APIs here.

5) Preference and Current Support

I must admit, I'm more experienced in C/C++ than I am with Java. In fact, I started playing around with Java just to develop on the OUYA. This is where I started noticing how the way Java is designed could affect gaming performance. That being said, there are probably many developers out there that already have a large code base/engine written in C/C++. I actually do, and it's designed to be multi-platform.

Conclusion

Again, this is an embedded system running on mobile hardware where CPU performance doesn't even compete with current-gen consoles (8-year old hardware) quite yet, let alone high-end gamer PCs. That being said, Java wouldn't be a good primary language for a device geared directly towards video games where performance is a huge deal. There's another discussion on some other forums about this topic:

http://ouyaforum.com/showthread.php?989-C-C-Support

I'd also like to develop my own skills in designing and implementing embedded firmware. I think that the OUYA's current hardware is a great starting point, especially for it's price, but according to that post above, I may end up bricking my console than hitting breakthroughs.

I think developing custom firmware on the console would be a neat project, promote its "hackability", and promote community support from outsiders. I'd love to write my own GUI system with a 3D backgrounds like you'd see with Mac OS X's Time Machine app, 3D icons, folders, etc. More importantly, I'd like to write a lean OS that only focuses on OUYA's hardware profile that could rival the firmware specs of the PSP (firmware only ate up a few MB of memory).

(Think Fiat 500 vs Ferrari Enzo). What's worse, OUYA doesn't have the hardware innovation or the long lasting developed brands like Nintendo had with the Wii.

It's hard to become original. A game about wizards feels like harry potter or lord of the rings, a game about sci-fi feels like a halo rip off, and acrobatic's action game feels like a Tomb Raider / Uncharted rip off.

My opinion is that I miss the good ol' platformers I used to play when I was a kid - my two favourite being "Rachet and Clank", and "Jak and Dexter" - I spent hours in grossed in them, doing the challenges the game characters or the story provided me with.

The universe was also innovative, and the characters made the stories somewhat witty.

I would love to see a good thought out Platformer as a OOO games.

What's you opinion?
