However, since AAA Game Devs usually cost Millions of $, I don't think it's too unreasonable to shoot for a $250k+ Budget, when the aim is to turn out a AAA Indie Game Title which is part Console Version, part special MMOG. Foolish to hope for, certainly, but NOT unreasonable. Especially if my Rev Share and Salary as Game Designer and Lead Writer are going to be next t-o zip.

So, I've been pondering what it means to democratize game development...

Ultimately, if we want Ouya game development to truly be democratized then a system must be in place where the one-man bedroom developer with a non-dev day job has a chance at competing against the 100-man studio with a million dollar marketing budget. A game shouldn't just succeed because its marketing budget is big enough to put it in front of a million gamers. A game should succeed because it's fun, or challenging, or clever, or addictive, or creative, or beautiful, or any combination of those things.

The question is, how do you make that happen? How do you decide which games should be pushed in front of gamers as they are browsing around the store? Even this early in the Ouya's life there are over 200 games and most gamers will not look through or play anywhere near all of them.

Here are my thoughts on what is necessary for this ideal:

No Paid Placements - This is currently true for Ouya, and ideally, this will never ever happen. I think you have to go with the Google Search approach here. Use some kind of internal (possible secret) algorithm to determine what games are listed first in each category. And placement within that algorithm has nothing to do with money. If it ever becomes financially necessary for Ouya to sell placement, at the very least I think those paid placements must be clearly marked as ads (again similar to Google Search)

Minimal game approval - There should be only minimal requirements necessary for game approval after submission and it should be based on objective metrics - things like "no hate speech" and "nothing illegal"... not "fun" or "beauty". Ouya seems to already be doing this from what I have heard and seen.

A "fair" ranking system - Of course "fair" is a very subjective term, but I mean what I mentioned above - that the 1-man studio can compete with the 100-man studio. And I'm going to go on record as saying that I don't think that Ouya's ranking system is fair.

Since #1 and #2 are taken care of already, I'll address #3. First, I needed to figure out Ouya's ranking system. I'm guessing that "O-Rank" (Ouya's ranking system which measures "key player engagement metrics") is what's used to sort the various games in the various categories. Here are my problems with O-Rank:

O-Rank is really just Most Likes - From what I can tell, "O-Rank" is really just "Most Likes" at the moment. Everything currently on the O-Rank list on the website is listed in strictly decreasing number of Likes. Maybe the O-Rank is still under development but "Most Likes" certainly doesn't equal "key player engagement metrics" to me.

Rich get richer - The O-Rank/Likes system is a "Rich get richer" ranking system. Once a game has the most Likes, it will be listed first, which means more people play it, and it will get even more Likes. A game that doesn't have many will be listed last and will rarely get more Likes.

Positive feedback only - The O-Rank/Likes system is a "positive feedback only" system. Likes work for Facebook because we're not so concerned with the quality of the status update we're about to read, but we are concerned with the quality of the game we are about to download. With an open, virtually unmoderated game store, let's be honest, there will be some awful games in the store. How will people know when a game is awful with a Likes system? Zero likes could mean the game is awful, or it could mean that nobody has played the game, or it could mean everybody thinks the game is just "OK" but not good enough to press Like, or it could mean that everyone is so addicted to actually playing the game that they haven't found the time to rate it. We need a more complex system that includes more levels of feedback.

Some say "if you don't have a better idea, don't complain", and that's fair... so here's my better idea:

I have participated in Ludum Dare in the past, a 48-hour game dev competition. Every few months hundreds and even thousands of games pop into existence over a weekend. And it is a competition, and there are winners, so they have to figure out how to fairly rank as many of those hundreds or thousands of games as possible. Personally, I think their system is brilliant and should be considered by Ouya for ranking their games. I think that the Ouya audience is currently very similar to the Ludum Dare audience where many of the gamers are also developers themselves, so I think their system will work well in this kind of similar environment.

Here's the basic premise of the Ludum Dare ranking system:

Your users can rate your game by giving it a number of stars between 1 and 5. Your final ranking is based on the average rating. This part is also exactly like the Google Play store, so it should be familiar to Android gamers.

Games are listed in order of decreasing average rating.

Only games w/ 10 or more ratings are eligible to "win" (in the case of Ouya store categories, you could list games w/ 10 or more ratings first, and then games w/ less than 10 after that). So every developer really wants to get their game rated.

Rating games is encouraged by having a special games category where all gamers, but especially developers, are explicitly encouraged to try out and rate games. This category is ordered differently than the others. The games listed first are games with the least number of ratings made by developers who have given the most ratings out to other games. So, when you first post your game, you're listed somewhere in the middle of this special category. You rate other games yourself and you move to the front of that category. Then, as others rate your game, you move back down the category. It incentivizes rating (for developers) and really helps EVERY game get attention.

Sorry to be so long-winded, but I think this subject is worth the word count. :)

Would love to hear thoughts from other devs (from both the dev and gamer perspective) and from Team Ouya too.

If I click on a game to see its details, it opens quickly, but when I close the details to go back to the game list, there is another delay of 10 to 15 seconds.

I watch the CPU monitor when this happens, and one of the two CPU's is maxed out at 100% the whole time.

This isn't a very fast computer, but it doesn't do this for any other website.

I tested with both Firefox and Chromium, and they both had the same delay.

Thinking it might be a linux-specific problem, I tested on my Mac. It is a faster machine, but it also locks up for about 6 seconds when loading the game list.

I tried using Chrome Mobile on my iPhone, and it froze fro about 30 seconds and then completely crashed.

The only Windows computer I have to test with is a very fast one with 8 cores. I tested there with all 3 of Firefox, Chrome, and IE, and none of them had a delay of more than half a second, but I did notice a big spike in cpu usage that does not happen when loading other sites.

So has anybody else seen similar symptoms?

In a few weeks I intend to get started on development for a new game I intend to release as an OUYA exclusive. For that reason I have been keeping an eye on the number of games that have been released for the platform to get an idea of how well the platform is doing. A couple of days ago I was encouraged by the steady increase in the number of games, the total number standing at 332 as reported in the OUYA website. However, today I have noticed the total has dropped to 58?

I was just wondering out of curiosity if anyone knows what you'd have to do if you wanted to say sell it in your store or if we wanted to open up a little cart/kiosk in a mall or something to sell them.

Just wondering if that's even something people are able to do if they really want to. So is it possible? And if so what would someone in theory have to do?

Not really planning on doing it, but just interested to see what the scoop is.

OUYA Dev Camp Berlin - Sep or Oct 2013?

Hey, I was thinking it would be cool for European developers to meet up in Berlin to discuss anything related to OUYA dev. It would be an unconference, so all of the discussion topics would be decided on the spot and people are free to join whichever topic they want. The idea is that the most productive times during formal conferences are coffee breaks, so unconferences are a set of structured coffee breaks. :)

At the venue I'm mainly considering, the hotel would cost 20€/night/person for a shared room (4 beds) and 50€/night for a single room. I hope to find sponsors to cover the cost of the meeting rooms, but without sponsors, I'm pretty sure I could organize the conference, so the program would cost 50€ per person (not including food). It's also close to the Berlin Schönefeld airport, so it would be very easy to reach for those flying in.

I'm looking to have 30-50 participants. If you're interested in meeting other OUYA devs in Berlin, please fill out this doodle - http://doodle.com/bevr8ea69eampzz6 - with your Twitter name and which weekends you'd be able to attend. If you don't have a Twitter account, just put in your real name or your Ouya username. I'd like to organize it at the end of September or beginning of October. I'm thinking Friday evening to Sunday afternoon.

Be sure to star this forum discussion, so you'll be notified when there is more information about this event!

If enough people indicate interest on the doodle, I'll start organizing it!

http://doodle.com/bevr8ea69eampzz6

I am a musician. I'm also an avid gamer and aspire to be a game designer someday. The OUYA's main philosophy is to "free the games" and essentially create and environment where anyone can make a popular game. The Discover Store is a great tool to achieve this with. However, what if we went beyond games? Yes, there are places around the internet to promote indie music (and films, art, games, etc) but what if the OUYA became an all-purpose tool that enabled people like myself to have the same chances as people who create games?

I just created a CD (sorry, shameless self-promotion BUT it's on-topic) here: http://t.co/H9UOE7f8uG

I'm stuck in a place where I don't know how to spread the word. Word-of-mouth, Facebook, and Twitter don't seem to be doing much (one purchase so far) and sites like ReverbNation are extremely intimidating because I have such a weird, not mainstream sound to my music. No one goes to indie music sites to find symphonic/electro-acoustic instrumental albums. They go for the acoustic guitar "indie sound" that has become the norm.

So what if we created a section of the Discover Store, an OUYA app, or a new menu on the OUYA that allowed other independent art forms to be sold/promoted? I'm not necessarily looking for a way to get more money; in fact, just to promote this new store I'd give away my music for free. I just want a place where my hard work can be heard.

Are there any OUYA devs or even staff out there that could talk to me about this idea? Is it do-able?

(Tl,dr: I want an "iTunes" specifically for OUYA users.)

Edit: Made title more relevant.
